DAMN - Water Pump Fails in 2017 C7Z - REPLACEMENT UNAVAILABLE IN USA
The water pump in my 2017 MZ with 8k aggressive but not abusive miles failed. Believe it or not there is not a single replacement pump available from ANY dealer/source in the USA.
Two track days ago thought I smelt antifreeze 3/4 way through 20 minute sessions. Engine ran quite a bit warmer than it should have. Coolant level not down and didn't add fluid. Drove it home and no odor. No coolant on the ground at track or home.
Drove it on the street couple hundred miles and no odor or issues. No fluid under car.
Last track day a week ago again smelt coolant 3/4 way through sessions. This time engine got hot and displayed so in DIC and went into limp mode. Did a couple slow laps monitoring gauges and it cooled enough to go out of limp mode. Did a lap and came into pits to check and believe it or not all looked good with level and nothing on ground and no odor. Ran one more session and identical overheat/limp mode results. Brought it in and same observations in pits as listed above.
Drove him with no odor and level good when I left track. About 50 mile drive home car engine temp was fine and no odor. Parked in garage and about 2 hours later went back into garage and lots of coolant under car and all the way to the garage door. Coolant level down just over a gallon.
Added coolant and car now losing coolant as soon as you start.
On a side note every time it got hot on the track I lost most of power steering due to heat. This also came back fine once letting it cool. Never before had heat issues with the power steering.
Got it to dealer and they say needs a water pump. OEM part #12678128 per the VIN. However, service dept. tells me this part has been discontinued and is unavailable. New part number is #12681259. I'm then told this is a "redesigned/changed" pump and not yet available. There's not a single one available anywhere in the USA.
Dealer says they were told the part is "expected" to be available on 6/19. This means I'll be without the car for right at 3 weeks "IF" the pump becomes available.
Not sure what to think. Water pumps don't typically just fail at 8k miles.
Reading between the lines it seems like there is a design issue with the pump that came on the car. Strange they would have ever changed anything on the pump since the car was introduced in 2015. Based on part numbers it seems there have been several different pumps on the C7Z.
FWIW, I'm well aware of part numbers being superseded by new part numbers with no change in the "part". This DOES NOT appear to be just a change in part number.
Three weeks without the car this time of year sucks as I'll be missing several track days I'm already committed to running.
I hope nobody else has a water pump fail in the near future...

EDIT: I just looked it up and FOUND OUT the same pump/manifold is used on ALL C7's since 2015 (i.e., same part number for Z06, GS and Stingray). If this is so there's not a water pump available for ANY 2015 and newer C7 ANYWHERE in the country. AMAZING.

Similar issue with a 2016 except the high pressure fuel pump failed, at the track with 3k miles. Took it to the dealer, no pump. They kept it for 3.5 weeks until a redesigned pump from a new manufacture was available. GM comped me $1k of GM parts for the trouble. I have 2 new front tires sitting in my garage when the time is right.
Pump seal failed and dumped fuel into the oil until it was over filled, then when parked in my garage, all the oil/fuel came out of the air box onto the floor.
Oh yeah, I had to call the GM customer service line and file a complaint to get the pump, they were not responding to the dealer.

The OP said "Water pumps don't typically just fail at 8k miles"
So I was sharing with him that water pump failures at 8K miles are not that uncommon.
EDIT Sorry, just noticed you are the OP.

I looked for a week for a 2015 pump housing and couldn't find one anywhere. I have a 2014, and wanted the new housing as the newer A&A blower bracket/tensioner was designed for the 2015+. I lucked out that Josh was able to do a new style bracket and tensioner that would work on my 2014 pump.

I hope you received your water pump. The water pump on my 2015 Z06 failed last week after approximately 7,700 miles of use. Dealer ordered a replacement on July 6. Pump was received and installed on July 10.

Heard a sound coming from under the hood that sounded like bearings going bad. Took the car in for another reason, but it was diagnosed on Friday, December 1st, as the water pump going bad also. 2016, A8, no mods, 27k miles, no tracking, light spirited driving only. Daily driver.

Had the same problem with my fuel pump on a 2005 C6, not a single one in the country. After a few weeks at the dealer I starred the lemon law on the car and they ended up buying it back. But there were other problems which started at less than 500 miles.
