is it safe to plug in an external cd player into the usb behind the door?

Yup, I bought it to transfer some old 1970s baby tapes. Worked great, and now I'm one of the few people on earth with a USB cassette player!

No idea if it would actually work in the Vette, I doubt it...

Why don't you try it? You wont hurt anything if that's you're question. I personally don't think it will do anything more than power your CD player. I can almost assure you no one has tried it before you. A much better bet would be plugging a CD player into the AUX jack. Good luck!
