Dealer advised me to replace my rear differential fluid?
Took my 16 Z06/Z07 13k miles into the dealer for some maintenance work and was advised to replace the fluid in the rear to avoid blowing it out lol I'm not sure whether to believe them... or to wing it, but then they added that they saw 3 Z06's that had 3k miles on them where the fluid was black so of course it presented doubt. Service charge is $169.99 which is fair but it is needed?

I’d do it. Especially if you have the factory fill in there still. Price is reasonable.

Really? I have 23k miles and haven’t done that, nor has anyone ever mentioned it. As a ragtop Z07, it has not been tracked, but has been run extensively on highways on multiple road trips, including coast to coast.

Fair enough lol looks like I’m changing it.. just worried about who’s back there doing it but if it blows it’s on chevy. 🤷🏻*♂️

There seems to be an additive to the diff oil for break in; plus a number of us found the oil to be low from the factory. I changed mine out at 1,600 miles and you had to stick your finger down as far as it would go and just barely touched the oil...

It’s filled through the FILL hole until fluid runs out. Filling through the drain hole will go poorly. LOL.
As for worrying about the dealer, this is a task that’s hard to screw up. One can also do it flat on your back without even lifting the car. It’s just a wiggle to get an adjustable angle 3/8†ratchet into the fill and drain plugs.
Always remove the fill plug first!

Just hold your finger around the tube from the pump. I always overfill mine as well as the manual trans.

I changed mine at 5,000 miles, wasn’t black. I even recall thinking why did I bother to take it out? Was a PIA to use the squirt syringe to fill it back up....that was the only “difficult” task to do.

I track my car so follow the GM recommendations for track maintenance which is change fluid after first track event and then after every 24 hours of racing or competitive driving.
If I wasn't driving the car on track I wouldn't bother with the diff change until the recommended 72K miles. Dealers are well known for upselling services by claiming they are necessary when they aren't.
