Default FYI - Lost a fellow racer yesterday..

We lost a fellow racer yesterday at Roebling Road in Savannah. Lost control in turn one, slid side ways, rolled and landed on the roof. The driver was killed and instructor in critical condition. I am not posting this in the "In Memoriam" section because I don't want to give his name out, so that his family will have time to grieve. I can tell you he loved HPDE's, been doing it a long time, and just a real sad story. We never think it will happen to us, until it does. This one hit close to home.

Never mind. I just read it was a HPDE event, not a race. Wonder what car he was driving?

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
One man is dead and another was seriously injured in a crash that occurred during a high-performance driver education event in Effingham County on Saturday.

A 70-year-old driver that has been described as experienced failed to properly control the vehicle and crashed the automobile shortly before the first turn on the Roebling Road Raceway. An instructor was also in the vehicle and was airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

The Porsche Club of America was hosting the two-day event.

Nightmare ending for every HPDE participant ever. Hate reading this. Hopefully this thread can stay out of the weeds. We all understand the risks. This just sucks.

Supposedly a newer 911. I saw a report where the driver froze, possibly due to a medical condition, and the instructor grabbed the wheel in attempt to prevent car to car impact during, or after, a pass on the front straight. Sad for sure.

Was there yesterday and this am, word is driver had medical condition and did not let up into turn one. Instructor grabbed wheel to avoid car in front of them, missed that one, but was unable to avoid hitting the tire lined, earth berm nearly head on at 100mph beyond the turn.. I think instructor was the fatality, very sad, it was my first de, I left a classroom and saw the helicopter around 4 pm at turn one. Thoughts go out to both and to the corner worker who was first on the scene, he was shaken.

It was a PCA HPDE event. They wouldn't let anyone near the crash, which was about 100 yards away, but there was all kind of speculation running around about what happened, what he was driving, etc. etc. Initially, the word was he was driving a convertible boxster, but checking the roster, he was driving a Porsche Carrera. After life flight left, they made us leave the track before they towed the car, probably because the driver was still in it, and they didn't want all kind of pictures of the car hitting the internet. They canceled todays event, so I went back to the track about 8 pm to pack up and go home, and the car had been towed and nowhere to be found, I speculate it got impounded for the investigation.

Darn - so sorry to hear about this.

RIP and condolences to the family of the deceased.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured one.

I hate to hear of this kind of thing happening, but it does bring the realities of our sport into focus.

May we all never have to experience this type of event.

So very sorry to hear this. I was just warming up to the idea of getting back in the right seat after I ended up on the roof in a student's car a year ago. I like helping students but when you look at the potential cost it's hard to justify. My condolences to the family and I wish the survivor a speedy recovery.

So sorry to hear of this. Thoughts and prays to both families.

An HPDE may not be a race, and should never be thought of as such, but like so many other things in life, there are risks involved. Those risks are less than engaging in reckless, high speed driving on public roads IMHO, but you simply can’t be prepared for something like a medical condition occurring at any given moment if that contributed.

As Poor-sha alluded to earlier, a big shout out to instructors who give so much of their time to enable so many others to explore and enjoy their cars on a road course. It is such a commitment on their part in so many ways.
