Default MRC Update - My review

All,

My car specs as follows -

2016 C7 Z06
Trim: 2LZ
Transmission: Auto
Mileage at the time of the calibration: 8576
Tires miles at the time of the calibration: 8576
Tires: MPSS ZP / Stock
Ride Height: Stock
Wheels: Stock

Going into this I was very skeptical.

On my way to the dealer yesterday morning, I made sure to go over every pothole / road imperfection I could find on my way to the dealer in Tour/Sport/Track modes.

Considering the dealer I trust is an hour away, I made the trip as I do not trust anyone else to work on my car.

This calibration was going to be done in addition to getting my complimentary oil change done at the same time.

I pulled my car into the dealer at 7:30am, I was out by 10:30am.

My car was pulled into the bay and situated at 9am. My tech didn't roll into work till 8:30am hence the delay. No worries, I used the time to catch up on my work emails.

I was advised early that morning the cost for the calibration would be $350 out the door. Gave them my blessing to proceed. My car would be the 3rd one they've performed the calibration on so no worries there.

I was allowed to inspect the whole thing. From the time my car's battery was hooked to prevent any discharge, the whole calibration took exactly 18 minutes. The calibration download via cars OBD II port. I was told the car needed to sit for 8-10 hours however the car didn't need to sit at the dealer overnight. I was fine to drive it home and have it parked for the temperature compensation to be stabilized.

No drama on my way back. All is well.

Today I took the car for a drive this afternoon and my feedback is as follows -

Steering - There is quite a difference with every mode. The steering in Track mode gives me E46 M3 levels of feedback which was quite surprising. Not as perfect as a true hydraulic setup but at least 30% sharper than stock. Steering in Track was better than the 991.1 GT3 I've driven before.

Tour Mode - Plush and absorbs the bumps a lot better than stock. Road imperfections do not shake the car and make it hop anymore. Word here is 'compliance' with road information that trickles through.

Sport Mode - Sport mode made the most difference for me. In Sport mode the chassis and damper are in perfect harmony. No disconnect.

Track Mode - As noted before, steering has less of that artificially induced stiffness. Lots of information through the steering. It's the perfect blend of my pre - calibration Sport mode and Track.

Verdict - Worth every penny. The key thing here is the Chassis and Damper are in sync in any mode. Thank you GM! This steering junkie loves his car more than ever before.

I don't think it is a crappy attitude. I believe in compensating people who go out of their way to improve the car they sold me 2 years ago even when they didn't have to. They did a lot of work to get the update correct and why shouldn't they be compensated for the work? They could have decided to work on the next model car and the Customers would have been just as happy. However, there are people who think they should always get a free ride no matter how much effort it takes somebody to do something. There is another term that can be applied to people who think it should be free, Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth. There is another old saying that doesn't quite fit but is close enough, Bite the hand that feeds you. Or maybe Kill the Golden Goose.

A recall is to fix a mistake, just like when something breaks and they fix it under warranty. They aren't fixing anything with this update. They are improving functionality and people pay for that and it is taking care of their Customers because they just chose to provide some investment protection for all of the 15,16 Z owners for a relatively low price. I don't need to run out and buy a 2018 or 2019 to come off corners harder. I now have the same capability in my 2 year old car. Let's see $350 for the capability or $100K for a new car to get the capability. Which would I prefer spending.

I wasn't aware that the steering would be affected by this update. Good to know. I may have to look into it.

Really interesting. Does anyone know what module controls the power steering? Is it the BCM? If so, if there any way to see if the calibration has changed?

Thank you for the write up - I am in process of finding a dealer that knows what they are doing and will get this done ASAP. Probably will help the bent wheel(s) issue that we have with these cars. Thanks again.

So I got a $90K Chevy and they want $350 for an upgrade? Makes the thief for the navigation upgrade look mild!!!!

GM does not understand how to take care of a premium customer.

I just paid $1,200 for a Polestar tune on my Volvo XC90 at the dealer. You're right. $350 is a rip off.

To the OP, thanks for the review. Now I am strongly considering this tune.

No sir, you have a 60-70k used 2016 (maybe...).

Why should this be free? Every model comes out with new features and upgrades. If you want the latest and greatest I would be willing to bet your dealer will offer you $50k for your "$90k Chevy" so you can upgrade to all the newest features.

Just stopped by Gunn Chevy in San Antonio to schedule my 2016 Z06/07 for the update on Monday. They sell a fair number of Vettes and have already completed at least one. They said the most difficult step was getting someone to answer the Techline.

I mentioned the cost and labor charge and they are adamant that for cars in warranty there is NO CHARGE. Wasn’t going to argue that point...

Will report back with results, hoping for great things. The SA said it is a significant change.

Do they do this update through the OBDII port or do they have to get access to the inner fender well to get to the actual MRC module?

The labor charge is for .3 hours so doubt they are going in on the MSRC module in driver fender...just a guess.

Can anyone confirm? It makes sense that they aren't doing that to me as well but ya never know until you know.
