Like I said - I'm a dope!
I'm sure I read it the first time I went through this post, then - when it came time to actually install my own R3/Blendmount/Mirror Tap - I went directly to the "technical" stuff and totally forgot post #2.
Lesson learned.

I had the wire tap working initially and then my blend mount loosened spontaneously and the whole thing fell. It ripped out the wire tap, broke the leads off and I was back to square one. No matter how many tries and new leads I used I couldn't get it working again. I finally gave up and just ran wires to the rear fuse panel and direct wired the ****.
Now i check the blend mount screw periodically. It likes to loosen itself.

Does anyone know the part number of the plastic piece that you initially have to take off to install the wire taps.... They have two little grills on each side and i put a fat finger of mine through one of the grills..... Thanks guys!

mirror taps
When I installed my mirror taps and blendmount for my Escort, here is how I did it Quite simple. I was skeptical about doing it because i thought it would be difficult.
Got my tools ready before doing it. pair of medium really good needle nose plyers, like they use on electronic parts. Not the big ones. Screw driver for prying off the cover, round small rat tail file (for making a round exit groove for the mirror tap wire to exit the mirror plastic case. And most important a very bright light to put on the dash to place on the windshield to light up the mirror while you are working and making it easier to identify wire colors.
I pushed the passenger seat all the way back, sat in the passenger seat FACING THE REAR OF THE CAR with my right leg between the seats into the rear compartment. Basically, my back was leaning against the dash on the passenger side. Then with the bright light laying on the dash facing the mirror, I gently pried off the bottom rear mirror plastic cover and set aside. Then identified the black and the purple wire coming from the roof into the mirror. Took the mirror tap red pin wire with my needle nose pliers and pushed it along side the purple wire slot using a steady gentle straight push until it seated. Did the same with the black pin wire to the black mirror wire slot. Used the rat tail file to make a round exit hole on the edge of the plastic cover that I had taken off for the wire to exit cleanly. The whole install took me about 15 minutes. The Blendmount took longer to adjust than the mirror tap install.

1) Agreed. I used the flashlight function on my I-Phone (very bright!) and sat the phone on the dashboard, leaning against the front windshield at the proper angle to illuminate my install work
2) This is pretty much the same position from which I worked!

My kit arrived from Blendmount today so I did the whole process after work. Everything went pretty smoothly, I could not believe how easy installing the taps was. Actually went with the middle size tap which was a better fit. Reinstalling the back cover took a little bit of finagling but got it to stay. My only regret was putting the flashlight in my mouth and taking a small chip out of my front tooth. Oh well, Appreciate everyone’s help on the forum. Definitely would not of tried this Without all the great pictures and videos.

Mirror tap length
sorry if I missed it but did we ever agree on whether we need the 10” or 12” or 15” cable? Mirrortap states 15” if there is a cover but that does seem long. Thanks

I literally did mine last night for my R3. 19 z06. Red goes to purple, black to black. 2 observations. There's a brownish wire that looks damn near purple until you shine a light on it. And the pin prongs are hard to push in, make sure you use a tiny screwdriver to make room. Possible you're not properly connecting to the purple, hence not working?

Hmm, odd. One other point, not insulting your intelligence, but you are tapping into the line coming out of the roof (body), and not the line coming off the mirror right? Otherwise, I'm stumped. Your cord is obviously fine if it works with the red wire, so that's not the issue.

Use the body line, don't tap on the mirror line. Plus, your wires will be lined up perfectly to come out from the top of the mirror rear cap
