A8 or M7? I think the A8 has different logic as to when its on. (more often on)

For A8 it is always on if not in Manual (paddles mode) but can be disabled with aftermarket product. For M7 is only on if selected with the console rotary dial.

I've never seen it switch to V4 since I never use Eco mode setting. Maybe if I was to do long drives on a highway I'd give it a try. But I don't think it makes that big of a difference on the gas.

I would never let it go into V4 mode with the A8 transmission. The LT-4 is a V8 engine and it will have significantly more vibration when operating in V4 mode; with the A8 transmission the torque converter lockup clutch is continuously modulated in V4 mode to provide "micro slips" allowing the converter to absorb much of the additional vibration created by the engine in V4 mode. This continuous on/off/on modulation greatly increases clutch wear although the latest friction modified Mobil 1 ATF is better at masking the results of this wear (the RPM variation and shuddering often reported in the general forum as these issues appear much more often in LT-1 equipped Corvettes which go into V4 mode more readily).

Since the M7 equipped Corvette doesn't have a driveline component that can soak up this vibration Chevrolet wisely modified its software so the engine only goes into V4 mode when the customer allows it via Eco mode. European spec automatic transmission Corvettes have the same setup with V4 mode only occurring when eco mode is selected. I use a Range module in my Z06 so that V4 mode is prevented when I want to put the transmission in full auto mode.

I've had AFM disabled in my ECU for at least a year. Then a couple of days ago I had a new ECU installed, I'm back to the factory program, and now AFM is messing with me again. I didn't miss it while it was away. Now my torque converter clutch feels all shuddery on gentle climbs and the motor gurgles annoying on downhill coasts, that sort of thing we've all become used to if you live with AFM.

I hate being saddled with their ineffectual system (yes it functions but I still had to pay gas guzzler tax on the vehicle, so not enough).

Short answer, already posted is yes. And yes, I use it but mainly in Tour (vs Eco) mode.

Took a short (~180 mile) road trip in my '17 A8 a couple of weeks ago through northern VA. Average MPG on the highway (mainly I-66) was just shy of 28 (calculated not indicated by the computer) and "best" indicated was 32.7 with cruise set at 75 for most of it.

No complaints.

Allen

I use Eco Mode most of the time when I am driving around town. It only switches to V4 mode under light throttle application. Anytime any power is required such as going up a slight grade it switches seamlessly to V8 mode. The only way I can tell it switches is the exhaust note changes. With the exhaust set permanently in track mode the muffler valves are open at all times unless the engine is operating in V4 mode. When the exhaust goes quiet I know I am in V4 mode and when it gets loud I know I am in V8 mode.
