Default Overheating issues

Hi all, what year Z has the overheating issues during track use? Did Chevy provide a fix for that year at their cost?

It improved slightly with the revised intercooler bricks, timing tables, and (on the M7) an aux cooler. But it just gave it a big more headroom, it didn't fix the problem.

You can drive the car as hard as you want on the street, and you can track it when the temps are in the low 70s or below, but you still can't track it hard on a hot day. Everything else is fine.

Mine is a 2015 M7 with the GMPP Secondary Radiator and I can track it hard all day with ambient temps into the low 90s. Just did one day at the NCM VIR HPDE where ambient temps reached 87 degrees and the car ran fine all day through 4 sessions and I set a personal best lap time of 2:03:11 which isn't the best somebody has run with a street Corvette but it isn't too shaggy either. In two plus years of tracking my car I haven't personally met a C7 Z M7 owner at the track that has had engine coolant or oil cooling issues.

Quakejake i have a15 z06 that i bought new. My car is bone stock with m7. I do put 15-50 oil for my track days. I live in ma and drive at NHMS, club Motorsports and palmer Motorsports and have never overheated my car. I will be at palmer tomorrow. I’m not the falstest guy on the track but definitely not the slowest. This winter i plan on putting the gmpp secondary radiator on like bill just for peace of mind.

All years, all colors, all transmissions, I don't think so. I just ran Heartland Park in Topeka, Ks this weekend with temps running high 80's in AM to high 90's in PM. 4 C7 Z06 cars there. Three M7 and one A8. Years 2015-2017. A8 driver said he uses the paddles and does not run it all the way to redline. No one had heat problems and all were driven pretty hard for full 20 minute sessions. I instruct for NASA and am race qualified as well. I personally drive the heck out of mine. I'm sure there are a number of drivers that suffer with the dreaded limp mode, but I have never encountered a heat related C7Z06 issue with my car or any other driver's cars in 3 years of running mine here in the Midwest. Guess it just varies car to car. Don't believe everything you read on the net.

I have a 2017 2LZ 8AT with stage 2 aero. Ran my car at the track recently with 1500 miles on the car. The first session in the morning I already encountered oil temp issues going above 285°. On the next session, I decided to let the car autoshift in D and oil temps "only" went to 275°. I also drive my car through the canyons on the weekends and if it's above 80° outside, my oil temp hits 230-250° depending how hard I'm driving.

Oil temp of 285 isn't all that concerning. Oil temp won't put you in limp home mode until you hit 320 degrees. Coolant doesn't put you into limp home mode until it hits 262 degrees. Based on oil temp you weren't close to limp home mode.

Thanks Bill. As long as oil temps remain below 280°, can I still drive it around without concern? I know our engines have a pretty high tolerance for temps but do not want to risk damaging the engine.

I think the highest I have seen my oil temp is 277 degrees after 12 or more very hot laps around a track. On the street it barely gets above the coolant temp. 280 degrees on the track is nothing. On the street I would be concerned.

Here is some data from a session where I had my best lap ever at Watkins Glen. Notice the fastest lap didn't occur until Lap 14 of 15. At 3.41 miles per lap that puts me somewhere around 48 miles of hard driving when I reached a 275 degree oil temp on my fastest lap. The Ambient Temp was in the mid to upper 80s. I don't know many places on the street where you can continuously push a car hard (accelerating, braking, cornering) for 50 miles. During my 2:05:81 lap I had the throttle wide open 41 percent of the time which equates to about 51 seconds. I was on the brake for 11% of the time which is about 14 seconds. The other 60 seconds I was at some part throttle application in a turn. 33 seconds of those 59 seconds are spent in just one combination of high speed (80/95) right, left, right turns. So there is lots of opportunity to generate high coolant and oil temps.

Bill
Can you please tell me what coolant mixture/formula is recommended for track days?
I ran WG last week and went into limp mode with temps about 86 degrees.
Thank you

Mine gets so hot even at the drag strip. I lost 11 mph in the 1/4 mile this Saturday. And this was with a 30 minute cool down and the fan running via my HP Tuner controls. Went from 132 down to 121. Didn't into limp mode but my manifold temp got up to 183* which pulled timing way down. Logged only 1.5* of advance in 5th gear crossing the line.

I’ve ran my 16 for 3 years maybe 15 track days at mid Ohio and Pittsburgh. Last month July 4th it was 95 and humid.

Ive only had one session, the last lap when it went into limp mode

not sure it helps but I always mix in some racing fuel. I think that might help. The lap it overheated I was on premium outside the track.

Im happy with my experiences but I know others have had issues

E85 doesn't cool the charge temps at the MAT sensor, so it will do nothing for IAT based timing retard.... DUMBASS..
