GM Jake Hood Decal - Install
Good Morning everyone
I purchased a GM Jake decal for my 2019 WGG ZO6 for a really good price (almost free) with my GM points.
My question is: Does it install "wet" or dry like some of the different wrap vinyls? I was under the impression that ALL the vinyl decals etc. install wet until someone at a wrap place said I should check as some/most of the wrap material installs dry. Not an expert at any of this and would really appreciate some helpful advise/tips.
I know the first will be; have an expert/shop do it - probably the best shot, but I would really like to do it myself. If I screw it up - oh well I'll take it off and pitch it -
Thanks Tom

I'm not a professional, but we have a professional quality vinyl cutter and have installed 100's of decals. I actually put a couple drops of Dawn mixed with water in a spray bottle. Clean the surface well, mist the area with the spray bottle and lay the graphic in place. We also use a squeegee to start from the middle and "push" any air bubbles out to the side. Let it dry. I just put numbers on my vette for the last track event.

Thanks to all who have replied. I'll check you tube for tips and give it a try "wet' with a drop of dawn.
Thanks again to everyone -- I'll post pic's on this thread if successful. I'll also let you know if I F - it up and end up throwing it away -- LOL

Curious about the results. I've considered one myself.

If you feel uneasy about doing it, most window tint shops will install vinyl graphics/hood stingers for a reasonable cost.

A really good tip is to use dawn dish detergent in a spray bottle with water and actually spread it around the hood with your hand to (kinda) lather it up. Then the decal will slide around easier to get it into place. I did this on my carbon fiber stinger and it worked perfectly.

Had the GM jake on my ‘16 Z & just had it installed on my ‘19 Z last week before taking the car in for paint correction & ceramic coating this week. The jakes were both installed by my tint guy who I’ve used for 20 yrs. It only takes 2-3 drops of liquid soap in quart of water to get the slick surface needed. Do this in garage out of sun. Spray the hood area LIBERALLY & don’t worry about using too much or covering more area than needed. Then spray back of jake same. The damn thing should have been made an inch longer for more to tuck under. Remove the hood vent to give easy access to fold it under (leading edge is most important to secure). The top edge of hood has a very rough edge where it folds under & is hard to get jake to hold well. After it drys I used low heat on hair dryer being careful to not get it too close & keep it moving to soften the glue & use finger (I used short 1/2 “ dowel) to press it into that channel. A touch of super glue is helpful sometimes. Squeegee from center out to remove all air bubbles. If any tiny bubbles show later use a needle to GENTLY put a TINY hole & use C/C to push air to hole. 👍

My guy cc's charged me 40 bucks. Hes a pro. That's what pros do...
I looked at it like this. It cost me 220 for the OEM Decal... 40 for installation so 260 all in.
Or 220 x 2 the. 40 bucks anyway if I screwed up... I'm old enough to know my limitations being ocd..
Good luck with your choice mine came out flawless. And Idk how he did it. So i won't be forever touching and playing with it and the edges lol.

I installed the Jake decal yesterday. THANKS to everyone for all the tips and advise. It came out very well -- just a couple little bubbles (tiny ones you have to look for) and I think they will disappear with some hot days in the sun. If not, screw it I can live with them. Here's what I learned from the above tips:
They all worked very well and to be honest it was a pretty easy job once I got started. A 1 1/2 beer job.
Taking the hood vents out (mentioned above) is a MUST! Tucking the front edge of the decal under without the vents in was very easy. Taking the vent out was only a couple Torx and clips that hold the whole assembly in and for me it was a little nerve racking as I didn't want to break anything. I had to pull a little harder than I wanted to, but it did pop out all the way around with a quick pretty hard yank. Going back in was easy; align the clips and a push and smack of the hand they all seated (un-broken) and secure.
Sorry I didn't get pictures as it was hot in the garage, but you have all seen a C7 with Jake stickers and it was time to finish that other beer !!!
Thanks again for all the help

Thanks to everyone from me as well. :-) I was undertaking the same job just this week with my "new-to-me" Z06. And applied some of the tips / tricks that I learned here. Turned out very well from my perspective!

How was it rolling it over the top edge of the hood? How much decal do you end curling around the edge and does it tend to stick well to the under side?

I ended up with about a 1/2" total overhang and that would include both the small vertical edge of the hood as well as the horizontal edge underneath. It doesn't stick that well on the small underside area but a hair dryer on low heat setting helped out! Just takes a little time and patience... as with anything else. ;-)

Here you go. It changes with way light hits it. With hood down it is subtle (ghost-like). It is applied with 2-3 drops of liquid dishwashing soap in a qt. of water applied generously to it's back & to hood. Make sure it is lined up front to back with a 1/2" at top of hood to fold under. It is MUCH EASIER to apply with hood vent removed to align with that edge. Usually have to keep sticking top part that folds under top of hood. I eventually used touch of glue along top edge. You have to THOROUGHLY clean the area where it attaches. Park it in the sun to help cure it better. Work the soapy water out gently from center to edges to get all bubbles out. Good luck! I had it on all 3 of my C7s/torch red-racing yellow-LBR now & it looked great on all those colors. PS: By the way, I bought all from GM Direct for about $200 each. There are much cheaper versions out there but I don't know their quality. GM Jakes are quite thick. Won't stick well if at all over ceramic coating. My detailer always said decal first then ceramic coating which I had on all 3 of my C7s.
