The new ZR1 won't have front fender spats but why all the hate on the spats?

When the Z06 came out felt like many, that the spats looked tacked on. Then Tadge in his post said they considered other options including molding them in and painting body color but with some colors it didn't look good. For aero reasons they had to make a sharpe angle with the fender. "Made me feel better" when I bought my Grand Sport!
They certainly were not going to made me not get it for the added tire width I felt my Z51 always needed!
Think the Stage 3 winglets and wider ACS Splash Guards I added help make them look more integrated. Also wider front fenders and bumper increase drag, more than wider rear fenders. With 755 hp the ZR1 can handle! As with the wider rear fenders and spats on the Grand Sport, for the ZR1 "Form Follows Function," so they look fine for it!
Just Sayn'
Stage 3 Winglets and Wider ACS Splash Guards Help Integrate the Spats, IMO
Painted, Molded Spats on Original Grand Sport Don't Look Better

The Z06's with the spats and all looks much better. IMHO

The “wider front fenders increase drag†argument is bull to a certain point. The C7R has the widest front fenders of all and around 490 HP and it seems to do just fine....
At the end of the day this argument is just going to keep going full circle. Whatever you have to say or do to try and justify the plastic extensions is what your gonna do, but don’t try and say it’s perfect.
Mark my words, GM will never put those on a Corvette again. That says something that even they know they could have done better.

Hmm, for GM getting low coefficient of drag is very important for their corporate mpg goals! Agree for a low volume ZR1 not much of an issue in their overall corporate number. But in a Grand Sport /Z06 that's over half the number on Vettes sold!
Assume the mid engine Vette will have a low cd and a smaller cid engine to help GM meet their overall goal!
Just Sayn'!

Have no idea but it's not insignificant.
GM states they put a large air dam on the Volt to get more miles on battery at highway speeds. An air dam reduces drag by reducing the amount of air going under the car. The drag increase from more frontal area probably has more of an effect.
Would think getting a few more tenths toward their corporate goal would be important to GM!

Probably .1 mpg and not even enough to accurately test.
What is the CD change with and without spats?

Whatever floats your boat!
I thought spats went out in the ‘20s.

Bought my Grand Sport for performance. Wide tires are needed so live with spats and wide rear fenders. Like the tail lights, they’ll grow on you!
