First Impressions vs Z06
Having not seen the C7 ZR1 yet in person, I wasn't certain whether the bigger wing was really my thing. However, I can say that I'm glad I changed my mind and decided to get the ZTK package, because it just works really well IMHO. A handful of observations right off the bat:
1. Obviously the hood bulge makes the sight lines a bit different than the Z. But, it does bother me a bit that part of the HUD view is cast against the left side of the bulge in the background. Not a huge thing and I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it's annoying at this point. Although, I'm not sure what else the engineers could really do??
2. As others have stated, the exhaust note has a deeper grunt to it. Definitely nice!
3. As expected the car sits up taller than my Z, which is lowered in Pfadt bolts. I plan to lower the ZR on either the same bolts or drop spindles. Regardless, I feel like I'm definitely sitting up a bit higher than I would prefer. I measured the splitter at 6.5" from the ground, compared to 4.5" with my Z. Yet, there isn't 2" of play in the front suspension...not that I would attempt to go that low even if there was. I like about a two finger gap between top of tire and bottom of fender.
4. I can definitely feel more quickness in the car, even without running it hard.
5. The rear view is actually less obscured than in my Z07, which I didn't expect. In the driver's seat, you can't even see the wing...only the two vertical supports.
6. The quality of the carbon fiber pieces are on par with my McLaren. Well done!
7. Paint quality seems better, but not entirely free of orange peel, which is completely fine with me.
8. Due to hood bulge, radar detector (temporarily mounted with suction cups) needs to be up higher in the windshield than the Z. But, I've got a custom bracket made that will move the detector up and to the right of the rear view mirror so it's out of the sight line.
9. Looks so much more brutish and menacing than the Z.
10. I like the contrast between the Shark Gray (Z) and the Watkins Gray (ZR).
11. Overall, the car is more than I expected. Very happy with the decision.
The car is already off to be completely wrapped in Xpel and having the windows tinted. From there it will get lowered and I'll mount the Uniden radar detector. Then, I'll get some miles on it and report back. For those waiting, it was well worth it!!

Congrats on your purchase. Post a pic!

Congrats.
Tell us more about your radar detector mount. I’m looking for something that mounts off the side of the mirror rather then below.
Thanks and enjoy it.

Glenn, I am SO excited for you! And I'm glad to hear the ZR1 really stands strong to a car like McLaren! And great call having the entire car Xpeled and tinted. It's GREAT to see you opt for the big wing too. Many, many congratulations.

Congrats on the ZR.
that picture is amazing. Captured the essence of both cars very well. I have a shark gray Z06 and I have yet to be fortunate enough with an angle like the one you have in that light to do it the justice you did. Wow.

Back when I ordered my first C7 Z in 2015 (Velocity Yellow), I had one of the mechanical engineers that works for me, remove the trim piece that runs across the front of the roof and behind the top of the windshield. He found a way to have a bracket made (cut and bent to required dimensions) that allows for the detector to sit just to the right of the Onstar box. Rather than using the mirror tap method, we run wire back to the battery.

Can the HUD be programmed to move to the left to clear the Hood bulge or no?

I’m in the minority but I think the Z06 flows so much better. I don’t like the front end of the ZR1 and that massive wing is just hideous. However I think the low wing looks really good.

plus the ZR w ZTK package is where it's at. The low wing doesn't do balance out the new nose well enough. Nose = radical rear should be just as radical.
not a fan of the fender gills on the ZR. Wish they were a bit wider. But it's hard to win at every turn. The ZR is as close as it gets for under 150k by a wide margin.
