I found this on GM's site, but no actual details of his "racing" history.

"Reuss is a certified industry pool test driver on the North Course of the Nürburgring Motorsport Racetrack in Germany, and is licensed for FIA C and IMSA Road Racing."

Maybe this explains why no Ring times. If he can't control a ZR1 at 2/10's as a pace car driver, can he handle one at 10/10's at the Ring.

Glad the airbags did their job. That was a hard impact.

If it's possible to pace from the rear than yes.

"And the backup pace car is identical. " Yeah, but without the required transponder.

Back to professional pace-car drivers.

That's the vast majority of sports car owners. Notice the number of videos of (insert sports car here (but usually mustang)) leaving cars and coffee and spinning into a curb. Just because you own it doesn't mean you can control it.

Not exactly an "inexperienced driver"; he is just not up to your professionalism as a driver.

Default Give Reuss a break

Accidents happen to everyone. Thry happen to pro drivers quite often. How many previous model Vettes have been wrecked with few miles on them because of their power and driver inexperience or carelessness. Something like this could happen to any of us. So many "perfect" drivers and bench race critics, who have never put a tire on a track, are quick to theorize without actual facts. They belittle the driver, who is knowledgeable about Corvettes, and imply that he is some embarrassment to GM or the Corvette ZR1 brand. Quite the opposite. He is a driver who simply had and accident anyone could have had. I hope he is not injured and continues his executive interest for great sports car development at GM. Reuss is a major reason we have the sophisicated Corvettes we drive at a reasonable price compared to the competitive market.

Wonder if any gm execs are required to attend driving schools before handed the keys to their sports cars...

However you slice it, it’s a huge embarrassment out of plain stupidity.

That's great, but unless you're honing those skills every weekend, or better yet every day, you get rusty. It's not like riding a bicycle.

He was driving the pace/safety car, and he had aids. If he wasn't using them, which I suspect he wasn't, that would be what I call bad judgement. I can't see the car snapping like that in normal modes barring some sort of malfunction.

However, as someone else said, we'll probably never know for sure, and yes, very good professional drivers also make mistakes, but that's usually when pushing 10/10ths. This was a different situation, and making good use of your resources appropriate to the situation is just plain common sense. He wasn't there to set lap records, and crashing a pace/safety car is just nuts.

Yes, we're just speculating, but the video makes it look all too painfully obvious what likely was the case. He was horsing around in a situation he shouldn't have been.
