ZR1 vs Z07/Z06

Only makes sense. Someone here is gonna be a little upset if so. Not to worry though as there are nearly 50,000 lighter, cheap to mod, better looking pre19 Z's out there.

I bought a 2015 C7 Z06 3LZ M7 (without Z07) about 3 months ago (with a 10 year 0 deductible GM warranty). I don't do track days or drag runs and find the Z06 is already frustrating since it's traction limited in 1st gear, and usually traction limited in 2nd gear when it isn't warm, which includes summer nights where I'm at in southern California. I assume the ZR1 M7 is traction limited in 1st and 2nd gear. The frustrating part is if it's cool, then the Z06 or ZR1 are going to get out launched by a few all wheel drive cars, and some RWD cars that hook up better. I do like the look of both the Z06 and ZR1. The Z06 gets less attention which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the circumstances. (I'd be more concerned about where I would park a ZR1).
My perspective is somewhat biased due to the fact I also own a 2001 Suzuki Hayabusa, which would translate into a Z06 with 900 hp (800 rwhp), and it isn't traction limited (just wheelie limited in 1st gear which redlines at 80 mph, but that's around 1.25 g's or so of acceleration), even in cool weather on cool tires. Similarly I considered a Kawasaki ZX14R, with an increase power to weight ratio (including rider) of 8.5%, but the end result is it's still wheelie limited in first gear, so you just modulate the throttle a bit more to avoid wheelies or use the assists, and there's no performance advantage until well past 80 mph, and to me and a few others, it's ugly.
Another issue is how much "spare" money you have to spend on a car. I could manage a ZR1, but that's money I now plan to use for other things like remodeling our home, and I already bought my wife a Genesis 5.0 (420 hp) with all sorts of computer assists (like cruise control that paces the car ahead and will come to a stop if needed, blind spot assist, auto hold on the brake when stopped, ...). My choice might be different if I had more "discretionary" money to spend on a car.

But I'd be careful with disparaging comments like that. There's a guy at our local Cars and Coffee who brought an '09 C6 ZR1 with paper plates on a few months ago and he's well known for owning a Voodoo Blue 918 Spyder and I've heard he also has a LaFerrari.
Kind of a douchey comment on your part.

From a street perspective, the 100 hp increase is not cost effective, from a track/high ambient heat perspective, the hp increase and cooling additions make it cost effective.

All of you guys are just jealous of the pinnacle of street performance, the c6 Zr1! Just kidding!
Why can’t we stop all this comparison junk ( that car is a dinosaur vs the other). Yes the C7 ZR1 is the pinnacle of performance. Yet, the average person who buys one to drive on the weekend will never maximize the Hp and Tq of the Zr1 on the street. Heck, they will have trouble maximizing the power of a Z06 on the street either.
Just buy the car you like (combination of performance, looks and utility) all depending on how you will use it. I will wave at you no matter which model you have.

Excellent post, two beautiful cars. I have an Admiral Blue M7 2LZ Z06 and with the latest round of enhancements (some from the ZR1 program) it is the best and last of the FE Z06's. I am fortunate to be able to have car (my 10th Vette) and pretty impressed with it so far. Is the ZR1 better? Yes. Would I like one? Yes. But, that is a 1st world problem in that I am not comfortable with buying a car at that price level at this time.

I'm shopping another new Z06 today I could buy the ZR1 just as easy but the value with the Z06 is much better than the ZR1. They are the same car GM adds the LT5 which is heavy tends to run hot and makes the ZR1 front heavy then weighs a hefty 3670. HP is locked in no tuning if you do want add power it is pricy with very few shops capable. Z06 can go to over 800 hp power run cooler for about 8k and weigh 3526 full of gas. Plus still cost way under MSRP!
Got 2 of them going to make a 3rd.

I've been fortunate enough to be able to keep my Z06 and love just driving the ZR1, my Z06 is my racer. I took the ZR1 around Daytona this past Friday and made 2 1/8th mile drag passes at our local track the week before Daytona. The ZR1 really holds very tight while at speed. I used to scoff at the big wing cars, but now know that they do indeed work if you have enough power to enjoy it.

I don't have a dog in this fight. (Both are great cars. One is better, we all know that. Hint: It's the ZR1)

It surprises me with all of the "you must not be able to afford it" comments. People are acting like this is FerrariChat.

The C7 Z06 is surely a capable machine. Glad you have modded yours - Now that they are modding the C7 ZR1 and able to tune them look out. Also, what if another generation Corvette (C6 or C5) that is heavily modded pulls up alongside of you and is 500 pounds lighter than your C7 Z06 with the same HP or more?
Just what Ben from weapon X and others posted about his opinion about the lt5 blower. I own race scales too! I'm going by modified car weight comparing what the ZR1 weights directly to my modified cars. I see no point in optional extra weight in a sports car that already gained too much weight. The Z06 is not too exciting stock it has a good low end but falls off from the too small 1.74 but the stock car is a great base..
Kudos to you for using the ZR1 like GM intended. That is where it shines but for us street use guys. A z06 with 800hp plus and 150 pounds less weight vs the ZR1,with the weight all off the nose. Plus it is discounted nicely under MSRP! Is where it is at! So good I'm looking at another Z06 only a new M7 2019. Since it carries the ZR1 fuel pump and other improvements.
this 2019 car may make more like 825-850. While it should still weigh at 3526 full of gas so at 1/2 tank 3450? With the 41 pounds less weight after the power mods. Lightness you can feel
A Z06 that will be getting the conversion after the 500 mile break-in. It is a beast!

I absolutely love my 2016 Z06 M7. I had zero intentions of “upgrading” to a ZR1. That is until I saw one in person. Also, the talk of no manual transmission in the C8.
So, I have one on order. The Z06 is a bargain compared to the ZR1. I plan on leaving the ZR1 completely stock.
1994 ZR-1 has been sold.
2016 Z will be sold or traded in.
TPW of 5/6 - I cant wait.
A lot more money out the door, but I never said I was smart. This car addiction is expensive....
I’ll report back after I get it and some seat time.

I thought long and hard about a C7/ZR1 and then decided for what I am doing with the vehicle I simply didn't need it for daily driving, I am not tracking my car ever and I am over modding my stuff, stock is just fine with a nice warranty.
Its a great car for sure the ZR1, and it would look great next to my 2009 AO ZR1, but the extra expenses for it and being it would not be a daily driver for me was my deciding factor to stick with a Z06-Non Z07.
I opted for a 2019/C7-Vert and its a $98.5k MSRP, the local dealer gave me the car @ invoice, plus their hold back, plus the Corvette Loyalty of $3k as well, if it is available ( which the dealer assumes it will be )
Roughly a savings of approx $13k before loyalty and probably almost $16k with the Loyalty Rebate or Discount whatever they are calling that.
So for $82k its going to be just fine for me, and at some point in the future as the C7/ZR1 become more readily available, and for less than $100k, I may pick one up for the sake of having another one.
Whomever wants one buy it, if you want a modded or stock C7/Z06 its still a great car, 650HP is nothing to sneeze at, its a bad *** ride no matter what, and its going to save you $55k-$65k which is not a bad thing.
We are all Corvette Brothers, its a pretty nice club to be a part of, these cars are not cheap, anyone who has one, or a few is doing well IMHO, so enjoy the ride, life is wayyy too short.

As A former Z06/Z07 owner 2016 car traded in on used ZR1 2019 I can tell you the difference in the ZR1 has it all over the Z06. The ride in the ZR1 is absolutely amazing. Just cruising down the interstate you will feel like you are in a Luxury car , the ride is far super to the Z06. And this was found out the second day of ownership. I personally am glad I did it. The C7ZR is King. No debate. Having had a C6 ZR and C7Z07 , unless you have driven a C7ZR you really have no idea how capable it is or the improvements over the others.

I'll find out tomorrow. Driving 700 miles today in my 2015 Z06/Z07 to Ohio to swap for a black M7, ZTK ZR1, then drive the ZR1 700 miles back home to CT. Even though I'll just be breaking it in, I'll hopefully be able to get a nice feel for the car after that long ride.
