Glaurung has arrived!
Picked up Glaurung from Tom Bell in Redlands this morning. I bought it from Andy at Barker Chevrolet in Illinois and he had it delivered to Bell. Where I immediately discovered that they had the wrong wing and splitter on the car Turns out they are delivering another GJI ZR1 soon and may have had both wing sets arrive ahead of the cars and picked the wrong one without thinking. But I won't know until tomorrow morning, because their parts department is closed on Sundays But Andy got them to write me a promissory note for the wing and splitter and with luck they will be on the car tomorrow midday. It'll be another 100 miles (round trip) on the car...but the dealership filled the tank for me and it's another 100 miles closer to being able to get on the power!
The car is wonderful to drive. But let me tell you that taking delivery on SoCal roads in the rain with track tires is.....well lets just say I'm glad I have a lot of wet track experience, lol. First turn onto the freeway and the back stepped out with less than 1/2 throttle at low revs. But it was easy to catch (what was that GM VP doing?) and after the rain stopped I got to probe a little more of the car's lateral capabilities. There is a lot to learn, and I'm doing it progressively. It is very comfortable, the ride and seats are great so far. The tires do make more noise than I'd like. Will probably accelerate my plans for a second set of wheels for non-track use.
GJI color is very dependent on the angle of the light hitting it. It's really beautiful. More pics will come later.
Don't know why this one is sideways here. It isn't, on my HDD.
The clouds broke and...
p.s. I just noticed that my whole house now smells faintly like a surfboard. Mmmmmmm, outgassing.

Congrats on your car. Terrific color. I have the WGG myself (car is back in MI) but several weeks ago saw two ZR1’s at a car show here in Scottsdale .. the only two I have seen here in two months... one WGG, the other DSG and have to say the DSG looked better in the afternoon light that day. The car was polished up better but still. GREAT COLOR. GOOD CHOICE.. sorry to hear about the wing snafu but that is something easily fixed. But like an earlier story of a dealer who mix/matched parts of a ZTK car, you have to wonder what the hell else dont some dealers know about the car. I’ve heard stories about under aero parts being installed upside down as well. I think GM needs to make sure any dealer touching one of these cars knows what the hell they are doing. Aside from the VIN, isnt it scary that your Cup 2’s didnt clue them in your car was a big wing car?

Awesome man!! Car looks great and I'm sure they will get it all worked out for ya. It will all be worth it in the end.. You're lucky to be able to drive it. I'm having mine shipped to my house next week after I get Xpel put on and the windows tinted. We got 4 inches of snow last night here in Pittsburgh and it's 28 degrees. At least I'll be able to look at it in my garage I guess..

- All of my performance cars have been named after dragons. Tiamat (2003 M5), Ancalagon (540iT), Scatha (Z4MC) and now Glaurung. In this case the car is named after the "first" or "father" dragon in Tolkien's Middle Earth mythology. Ironically I ordered the ZTK package and Glaurung was a wingless dragon, but whatever - the name suits the car. Mostly the color and attitude. And the SOUND. My M5 sounds like a wolf, the Z4MC a chainsaw, the ZR1 actually sounds like a dragon - it gurgles, roars, etc. Pretty funny. And bad for MPG!
- Thanks. Can't wait to get it back from PPF so I can outfit it. I have tow bars too, plain black, and will probably run with them on all the time like I do with my MC.
- Me too! Car looks so much better now with the ZTK wing. Taking it up to Santa Ynez for a weekend road trip, will pass 500 miles during that Should make for some great picture opportunities.

- What did you do??? I Pshop all the time and had it rotated fine on my HDD. But the forum kept turning it when I'd upload it. Didn't see any correction mechanism within the thread GUI.

*UPDATE*
The car now has proper ZTK kit installed, and has been dropped off at Envious for much PPF work. Will get it back Thursday, then ROAD TRIP!
Ongoing issue...registration. It is a CA car, with CA smog, bought from Illinois but delivered and sold as new here in CA. But somewhere things got muddled and I now have a sub-30 day IL sticker but must somehow register it here. Exact procedure to be discovered by Andy at great expense to his personal time. My question is, for anyone who has done courtesy delivery in CA, what was your registration experience? Did you drive away from the dealer with CA registration as if you had bought any other car off the lot?

The ZR1 is amazing to drive! I'm limiting myself to appx. 1/2 throttle and 1/2 revs to break in the engine, and I still broke the rear loose at 89mph with an aggressive 7-4 downshift. Tires were cold, but still It's also a complete pussycat to drive calmly. I prefer the steering in Sport, seems to give me more feedback and less knockback than in Touring. Exhaust is set to Sport always, though Stealth is appreciated very much.
I LOVE the turn signal stalk! It feels really good to use, very precise, good weight, perfect spring tension and reset. This is compared to the mechanical stalk on my M5, and the electronic ones on my X3 and Z4 M Coupe. the C7 stalk is far superior. In fact, most of the switchgear in the ZR1 feels better than I would have expected based on reviews. I think it's in the ballpark of luxury German, at least of 1 car generation ago, which is amazing given where the money had to be prioritized for the ZR1.
There are some obvious, albeit minor, fitment or quality issues - like some slight lack of smoothness with the dash leather around concave curves, etc. Stuff that Germans or Japanese would have nailed. And while you see it, you don't touch it. So I'm glad GM put money into the stuff I actually touch, because it all feels like quality.
I like the sounds of the exhaust so much I'm not getting great mileage atm. But for a 1/2 mile or so on a flat road I was traffic-limited to 69mph in 7th and saw a steady 29mpg indicated on the instant-MPG-display for that 30sec or so. Which is in keeping with what other owners are reporting. That with with the ZTK wing, and Cup tires - but they were over-inflated a little by the dealer (35/37).
LOVE this car. Want it back from detailer so I can drive it!
