Good God. Never saw the pics when that occurred. Remember reading the article though.

Really opens your eyes to why roll cages and 5 point harnesses are required at the speeds this car can achieve.

Gotta think he probably avoids that C1 with a Hans or hybrid device. Glad and amazed he looks so good.

HANS, as far as I know, would have done nothing to prevent spinal cord separation in a non-longitudinal axis. Damn glad he survived that wreck, amazing. Will to live FTW.

C1 fractures, in motor vehicle accidents, typically occur as a result of axial loading which a HANS device is designed to prevent.

That being said, my response was way too cavalier and should have read something like “I wonder if a HANS device could possibly have prevented the C1 fracture.” My appogies if he or any of his family should come across this.

It is in Manhattan, KS. Just a short jog off I-70 if you are planning a cross country trip.

No substitute for youth.. even still.. miraculous. So happy to hear of the speedy recovery. Looking at the car gives me shivers. Any information on what caused the crash that might be instructive to us? What not to do is often as important than what TO DO.

Does the pdr automatically record when on the track or performance driving?

I always say the rolling and flipping doesn't really do all that much as we have experienced twice now with our cars over the years. It's the hitting of the hard structures like trees and retaining walls that really messes stuff up.

Already asked but leaves me wondering as well if he'd been wearing an R3 if he would have been injured as severely? All I know is that I am wearing mine at all times from now on in students cars. Thank God this young man is going to make what looks to be a complete recovery. Certainly a miracle.

When dealing with these modern cars I really wonder if a roll cage is as important as it is in older cars that don't have the safety cocoon that the modern Vette has. The cab structure survived just fine without a cage....which can cause other injuries such as your hands and legs banging into a unforgiving steel tube.

What could have helped in this situation was some sort of HANS device. Hard to say if it is better to stay with the 3 point harness and go with a hybrid HANS or full harness and a traditional HANS.

I'm very happy to see young Drew make such an incredible recovery...that was incredible. I'm not sure what the condition of the driver is. But if he too survived and is ok, then I think the car did an incredible job at protecting its occupants. Good job GM.

Wouldn't a hybrid Hans be more dangerous in a rollover though? Keeps the helmet (and head) vertical, vulnerable to impact if the roof collapses?
Contemplating getting one, as I track and daily my Z.

A hybrid HANS is like wearing a strap on safety vest and is attached to your body, not held in by the 5 or 6 point harness as a traditional HANS would use. It is designed for a 3 point safety belt like what comes in the car stock. It would allow your body to move around as much as your 3 point belt allows it does.....so if you were going to get crushed regardless, it wouldn't matter if you were with no head restraint or a hybrid HANS.

Here is what I'm talking about:
https://simpsonraceproducts.com/hybrid/hybrid-sport/

It makes a lot of sense for people that drive in cars with real harnesses and 3 point belts....I've seen a lot of instructors starting to use this because they are jumping from car to car.

I'm no crash expert, but it looks like the cabin of the car held up well.
