After enjoying a nice relaxing day of cruising without the top on, I had stopped to put it back on. In the middle of locking it, a interesting man came up to me offering to trade me a goldfish and a bucket of KFC (both of which he had in his hand) for some weed. I politely declined, but I was honestly so confused I forgot to lock the front two locks on the T-Top... Lets just say carbon fiber being so light has its pros and cons. I am just glad it didn't hit anyone or anything and the inside was perfectly fine, but alas the outside will need some work. So I leave you all this, as a friendly reminder lol.

Currently the car is at a wrap and auto body shop. Going to try to smooth the deeper hits and then wrap it in gloss blacks to match the A-Pillar. Should be done either tonight or tomorrow. Will post updated pictures then.

I'm sorry to hear and can easily see how this could happen. I hope all turns out well in the end! BTW, where in California are you? I'm in the bay area is why I ask.

My wife and I rented a Hertz edition Z06 in Vegas last September and we had a similar experience. We had a bunch of people come up to the car asking about it and I forgot to lock it in. I've had 3 Corvettes now and I don't think I have ever taken the top off. Luckily I had bought the insurance because they paid for everything. It was the first time I have ever bought their insurance but I knew I better because my buddy and his wife rented the same car and I knew we were going to beat the hell out of them. You might want to look on Ebay for a used one. I think that is what Hertz did. Or just do what you are doing..

Looks like it spun toward the driver side on its way off and scuffed up the paint?

Definitely, I took a look at some used ones, but I hoping to fix this one because the insides stitching is the Serbring orange and it matches the rest of the car. We are starting with 800 grit then moving up to 2000, then using resin to fill in deeper cracks, In all I was quoted with 300 for the full repair and should be done in about two days. I know it wont look the same as it did, but Its much better spending over 1500 for a mismatch used one, or 3000 for a matched new one.

Yes it did, When i was watching it in my rear view mirror, it hit the ground first on its driver side then slid onto the passenger side. The scratches on the paint are the worst of them all, But id say that 80-90% of the scratches have come off with the sandpaper so they were mostly superficial. Its amazing how strong carbon fiber is when it goes flying off your roof at 40mph.

I still remember the salesman when I purchased my first corvette in 85', saying "when you put the top on latch it, or be prepared to pay out the a**" , I still remember that every time

Sorry to hear. Looks like a costly mistake. I’ve read this happen a lot here. I personally take mine on and off a lot. To avoid this I’ve actually gotten in the habit of after latching all 3 parts I get out of the car and pull up on both drivers and passenger side to double check it’s secure. May be a waste of time to some. However this would take even more time to fix. They also make those tags that hang from the front as a reminder. Some find them useful.

That sucks. Life is full of distractions. So the guy bought the KFC before smoking the weed?

Suckage.

I make a habit of leaving the visor down until I latch it.

Get a transparent top to tide you over until you fix or replace the solid one. Then you have the best of both worlds.

I’ve seen a decal that might solve future problems:

Default Update

Just got the car back from the shop. The guys at Endless Autosalon in Murrieta, CA really did a great job. The restoration included full sanding, then primer, along with a gloss black wrap over it. I also tinted all windows with ceramic. Out the door with the fix to the roof was $550. Amazing guys, and only took 3 days.

It looks good considering what happened but I would have to have the visible carbon fiber top back if it were mine.

definitely, this was more of a temporary fix, the shop and I are exploring ideas on using a clear coat to fix the deeper scratches. But in all honesty. I’m happy with it now, it saves me the 3k+ to buy a new roof to match. That 3k would do much better for a tune and headers
