...now watch this thread implode.

Definitely the best rendering by far!

I have confidence in the Corvette team as far as performance is concerned. Now if they can improve overall quality, dealer experience and dealer inventory control, then it will be a grand slam!

Not going to happen, GM still has too much Camaro tail light inventory in the parts bin.

A new Vette is affordable if you are middle class. The engineering and R&D costs alone for a mid-engine Vette would make it unaffordable to the average Corvette owner today and no service department mechanic employed by GM would have the expertise to fix a mid-engine car that's the caliber of a Euro super car. Even a one-off mid-engine Vette would be a waste of resources for GM as it wouldn't sell nearly as well.
I find it interesting that GM would close the plant to the public (both Engine Build & tours) for 18 months & invest 439 million dollars for a paint facility upgrade. It also seems excessive for upgrading the FE car from a C7 to a C8 which many feel won't happen for 2 or 3 years.

I'm with CD, Jag and Joe.

I think we're going to see both a FE and ME platform going forward. Essentially the ME will simply be an additional model in the lineup, for those who want/can afford it.

I'm one who very much wants to see this come to fruition, but like all the rest of us, will just have to wait and see.

Agreed.
If anyone believes that I have some beachfront property in Arizona I'm willing to part with.

I'm not sure there really IS a market for both a FE and a ME Corvette.
2 entirely different chassis for sale at the same time?
I dunno about that....

Considering the model lineup..
Stingray 1Lt,2Lt,3Lt and then Z51
Grand Sport with Z07 and LTZ packages
Z06 with Z07 and LTZ packages
ZR1 with n packages ( big wing, little wing)

That's already a heck of a lot of choice from one platform.. then add ME on top of that and you'll likely scavange some sales from Z06/ZR1 variants.. which may doom them to history...

Porsche hasn't seemed to have any problems at all with over 20 different variants of the 911.

I don't believe having both an ME and various FE models will be an issue at all.

Your on to something..... Porsche caters to the international market whereas GM primarily caters to North American Market. I was referring to the North American market but if you truly build and sell a world class car, then its not an issue.
Tell tale sign will be availability with right and left hand drive variants.

^^^ I agree. It comes down to execution. If done well, it'll work. If not. . . . . .

Grist from the rumor mill.

The mid-engine Vette has been speculated on since the 60s.

Not that it might not be on GM's collective mind, but sales of the Ford GT are any indication, I don't see GM's bean counters advocating for a Zora car.

http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/ford/ford-gt/

The best scenario is ADDING a mid-engine C8 Vette as an ultra-low volume vehicle while maintaining front-engine C8 Vette options for the masses.

So it makes zero business sense to build a mid-engine Corvette.

A mid-engine car would sell world wide.

Wouldn't increase volume enough to justify production costs.

In the short run (other than "scavenging" some Z06/ZR1 sales), it wouldn't be much of a problem.
HOWEVER, the ME has been strongly rumored by many insiders to be the C8.
IOW, an eventual replacement for the FE platform.

We've all talked about this stuff on this forum for at least a year now and recently came to a majority consensus awhile back regarding the ME and C8, etc.
Not sure why it's necessary to re-hash this...it's not like we've received some credible new info on the subject.

I don't know why you believe Corvette is or needs to be competing with a one-off, sold-out, 1000 limited production car Ford built to celebrate their winning Le Mans entry of 50 years ago.

The best scenario is ADDING a mid-engine C8 Vette as an ultra-low volume vehicle while maintaining front-engine C8 Vette options for the masses.
And it works best (initially) if it's a Cadillac, which is exactly what the head of Cadillac let slip last January.

I said no such thing.

Maybe, but I don't think the ME design in and of itself would the determining factor.
Let's not forget the FEs of Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mercedes, Maserati, Ferrari, etc.

R & D costs and production costs. They are exaggerated. They already have the equipment. They have employees, they're already getting paid by the hour or salary. I don't think it's as expensive as they make it out to be to make a new model car. It's like the ambulance that comes and picks someone up after an accident. Did it really cost over $1k to go pick the guy up? For that one specific trip it only cost about five bucks in gas. They already had the equipment and the employees were already being paid.

No, the ME has been rumored to be the C8 by many outsiders. The insiders aren't talking, and haven't said sickum. It's been car rags, and car forum discussions like this where you've seen people conflating the ME with C8.

All of those C7 models are based on practically the same car.

A front engine and mid engine Corvette would be two different cars entirely. They wouldn't have anything in common with each other besides the name. Entirely different production lines. It would be a massive difference compared with different trim levels of C7 compared to the wide body hi-po versions GS/Z06/ZR1 etc.

I don't know. It will be interesting to see what happens.
