Although I may be totally wrong it looks to me that what FVS has illustrated in red above showing the cove starts NOT on the door but is actually almost completely on the rear quarter panel with only a small curve showing on the door. Why I feel this way? Why would GM create a cove beginning on the door that has to be engineered to open and close thousands of times while maintaining a seal. With that a door, already big on the C7, would when opened extend what looks to be even 8-12” greater in a parking lane. KISS would suggest otherwise.
So take a look at these pictures that offer why FVS has got it right IMO. Even though the Camo ME shows otherwise, I now think it is a fake cove on the door, or maybe even accommodates instrumentation to calibrate air flow and will soon be removed.
Even one picture shows a door gasket in the same position as with a C7 running from A to B.
and while not a million dollar machine I am sure (read hope) they engineered the panels to withstand a bit of ABuse. ; )

This is what I think is fake or for use in testing thus not the INTAKE opening which is actually on the rear quarter panel.

If I understand you correctly, you think the opening you outlined above is not the COVE? Not sure if you maybe mean intake?
I visualize the area you circled as the concave hollow that begins at the front wheel and slowly gets deeper until it reaches the intake at the rear Q in front of the rear wheel.
The "cove" has to begin on the door and deepen as it goes back into the actual intake which is on the rear quarter just as it does on the LaFerrari.
In this drawing, I tried to flip the cove shape and project it on the side to show how it works.in my mind. Note the yellow line that follows the shape you circled.

FVS, my mistake calling it a ‘Cove’ when instead I should have written ‘Intake’. So I went back and edited out ‘Cove’ and replaced with ‘Intake’. Given that, I still am not understanding what that apparent ‘Structure’, on the door covered with a Camo flap is. The small upper left corner in this close up pic below suggests itis solid going all the way around forming an oblong circle form thus supporting the Camo flap. What is it, and it’s purpose?

CJ: Not sure of the date that pic was from so you may be correct as modifications progressed. We shall see.

According to Pimp, the area you and toolhorder circled is an overhang of the top leading edge of the scoop which hides the door release.
If if you look at the top edge of the LaFerari with the door open it has the same “hook” shape.
The ME will have a door edge "similar" but a bit less drastic. IMO

T's hard to imagine the addition of any airbox or scoop intake that would extend the door any more than my C7. I just parked my C7 between two cars in our parking lot. If there was a large airbox attached to the door as suggested in those early open-door mule shots, I would never have been able to exit the vehicle.

I hope that whole door is carbon fiber! I wonder how many stress cycles it can take and/or what happens if someone yanks on it with the door accidentally locked!

FVS, thanks for your patence explaining how you arrived at that in your illustration. Like ToolHarder expressed, that better be extra strong to survive if a ‘wild’ door opening damages what looks to be what on the door would strike something first. I AM CONVINCED YOU GOT IT RIGHT!

I think it is a bit of an optical illusion. I don't think the door is necessarily much thicker but the "cove" creates the "coke bottle" narrowing.
I made a quick drawing to show this.

No doubt that area will cause some anxiety. Gotta take it easy swinging that door open...but I suppose most Corvette owners and other exotics are a bit more careful.

Carbon fiber would only make repairs more expensive. CF still breaks.
"Maybe" that lip will be a removable/replaceable trim part?
Will be interesting to see how they deal with this potential issue!

Look at a picture of the 2019 Denali truck with the "CarbonPro" material and you'll likely change your mind. Truck beds are made to take abuse and GM threw stones (literally) at Fords "military grade aluminum" and punctured holes in it so I feel confident they've covered their criticism of Ford with this new composite and it will hold up far better than standard carbon fiber that shatters or fractures on hard to medium impacts.

The original open-door mule images suggested that not only the cove but the outer part of the intake was included as part of the door panel. The only conclusion that makes sense is that this was an early design effort or simply camo since you would not have been able to park this version without vertical doors.
Compared to the C7 it would be a lot of extra door.
