I mean, for example, the new Toyota Camry was debuted at the Detroit Auto Show and the base price jumped from say $20K to $40K. Or even with your pickup example, the new F-150 comes out and the base price jumps from $35K to $70K.

I believe higher end trims can cost much more than the base trim. I just don't think the base trim will jump that much.
Agreed, the only way this will happen with the C8 ME is if they offer both a C8 FE and ME at the same time, making the ME a "special" model. But all signs point to there being only one C8 chassis, the ME.

Have you ever looked at the base price of a 911? It bares absolutely zero relationship what you pay to get one off the lot. Close to a 100% difference in price. I don't think you even get an interior in the base price.

Do the big 3 forum dealers ever markup their inventory or factory orders of a new generation Corvette at the start of a new generation? Or do they initially sell at MSRP and then start discounting after the first or second year?

My data point is for the C7 Grand Sport not the C7 Stingray release but I ordered my 2017 Grand Sport in Feb 2018 which was around 3/4 of the way through the first GS model year. MacMulkin was 12% off MSRP, no doc fees and Criswell was 11% off with doc fees. I don't think either of them ever charged above MSRP but since I wanted spring museum delivery (for the drive back to Colorado) I didn't start looking at prices until late winter 2018.

You paid $3k under msrp for a first-year C7 in 2013? Great to hear that compared to the $10k markups I saw in local dealerships in 2016 when I first started shopping around.

Yes

My local dealers were charging at least $5k over MSRP because they had very limited allocation at the time.

low volume dealers will try to squeeze every penny they can get out of them. One, maybe two, corvettes are all they are going to get. High volume dealers will sell at MSRP or maybe a slight discount. They want to move them as they may have a few hundred more coming in.

None of the big forum dealers have charged over MSRP for a C7.
The "deals" on the 2014 C7's started around mid-December 2013 for the ordering of certain cars - to be particular: non-Z51 equipped Coupes - due to constraints in Z51 packages, there were more allocations for non-Z51 cars than confirmed orders at most of the big dealers. I got 7% off a 2014 base Stingray when I ordered it in January 2014.

I saw C7s with $15K dealer mark ups above and beyond MSRP in N. Austin (lots of high salaried tech people on that side of town). More than 1 in fact.

Maybe,
I now could afford a Ferrari but would chose a Vette instead. That has been my dream car since I first got my license in 1967. In those days a Vette was somewhat affordable if you had a good job, which I did not have. I remember a friend buying a used 65 for a little over 3k in I think 68. My wife, girlfriend at the time bought a 1970.5 Firebird Esprit fully loaded for around $4,500 a Vette was probably going for around 6K, almost affordable. That is how it's always been over the years. As I got older I could have afforded a Vette but with kids and other obligations it was not practical. Now I am near retirement and was looking at a 2019 Grand Sport $81,000. I could afford it but being Frugal (cheap) all my life I'm hesitant. I presently drive a 93 convertible which is fine but before I'm not able I would love a new one. To me a Ferrari is just a car that someone else would own.

Some of the car dealers in that town are not good/give a bad name to the better ones.

A Corvette is more than just a car, it's a lifestyle.

I wonder how many words have been written about this car that isn't even on the market yet (100,000,000?). It definitely shows there is a passion for all things Corvette and all things related to sports cars. I happily share this passion.

Could you imagine how much would be written if Chev leaked details on the new Chevy Sonic? Crickets.....

I agree with the OP that a new Corvette is an achievable goal for the middle class. It is also a cheap toy for the 1% and an unachievable car for the portion of the population on the lower end of the socio-economic scale.

Of course, looks are subjective, and I think my C7 is more attractive than any current Ferrari. (I think the last truly beautiful mid engine Ferrari was the 360, and front engine Ferrari was the 599) If GM does what I think they will with the C8, it will be a grand slam home run, a steal for what it costs, and first and foremost, a Corvette.
There is something about a corvette and the "WOW" factor. Where I work there are a group of guys that are really into cars, there are Porsche owners, Vette owners, Vipers and Alfa Romeos owners, When we get together to go out and get something to eat after work, they are usually a handful of other guys looking over the cars, but what I have noticed is what attarct the majority of the lookers are the Vettes. They always start the conversation by saying, "we came to see the Vettes" and what so funny is that the owners of the Porsches are the one that gets a little hot under the collar once the "lookers" say that. But there is a magnetism about Vettes that other few automobiles have.

Playing the devils advocate here, do the folks taking this stand consider $130,000 "affordable"? The reason I ask is that Corvette already makes a model that $130k is about the average price of - the ZR1. So isn't it conceivable that the C8 could be just another $100,000 + Corvette model that is not what I would call affordable by anyone who can afford a C7?
