Default C8 Delayed?

Doing my best high school girl gossip impersonation... I keep hearing rumblings on social media that the C8 has run into "issues" and is "delayed". Not sure if GM's latest big announcement of discontinuing certain vehicles and shuttering plants has anything to do with it. I find it odd that they've confirmed they're going to run the C7R for 2019 with IMSA when we saw the C8R testing awhile back at this point and Fehan told us all at the bash in April the car was well under way... he was given a "STFU" look by Harlan and later walked his statement back in a press release after the bash. Also, there was a recent odd release about being able to buy the C7 new in the Philippines... why would GM go through the logistics of offering this? Also, we have no marketing, no teasers, nothing... only GM action has been to have the ME concepts on display at various events this year. It's like they have been working up to something and now it's been pushed off.

Thoughts?

One would think as you get closer to the reveal you would see more spy photos of cars being tested in the public, not less.

I agree. If they were going to launch the C8 in Jan we would know by now. Looks like spring at the earliest.

If there was some issue with the car, much better to catch it in testing than rushing to release and the problem surfaces in customer vehicles.

Take the Audi R8 for example- the whole front frame cracks from normal driving due to VW/Audi not properly reinforcing the frame in high stress areas. See the recent "Samcrac" videos on youtube where he buys a salvage one with this exact common issue.

From my confidential sources I am hearing that it has been pushed back from a 2020 to 2021 model year and that they are 'addressing issues' that were discovered/developed during late stages of testing the pre-production models. Won't be seeing anything new for awhile. The C7 FE platform will carry on for "at least" another model year due to these recent developments.

If they are going to charge $170K for one then I need them to delay 10-15 years to save up

Glad they are going to make it stable but if this turns out true my 2019 fun year is ruined.

The Cobo car show is going to be pretty somber for GM this time , too bad as they need some good news in a very bad way after the news yesterday. Looks like nothing to see there, unless you are excited to see the GT500 Mustang or Toyota Supra! lol.....

In my gut I feel this is true.. given the totality of circumstances. GM likes a teaser ramp up to a new model vs. Ford just dropping the mic out of nowhere like with the Ford GT.

Are those issues frame related? There was a rumor earlier this year that they had run into frame issues.

the events of the past few days certainly are supportive of this... and they cancelled the ct6 and volt.... the killing of the volt is very bearish for a global car company..thats a complete walk away from real world testing of electric... there must be an internal outlook white paper that was very, very grim for gm as a whole.

Been reading about the delay here and there as well. With the 2019 IMSA season ending in around October, does this mean GM will not debut the C8 until after that?

From history, they don't debut a new gen while the old one is still being used in it's race programs. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out in the coming weeks as more info "leaks".

I went by dealer today and they advised they hadn’t gone through the training yet for the C8, they hadn’t heard anything, and that people are coming in with deposits but they aren’t authorized to accept deposits for the C8.

Once GM hits 200K sales of Bolt and Volt combined, the tax credit is over. What ever credit is now left, GM wants to use on Bolt.

CT6 was cancelled because its sales were pathetic. It could not compete with Mercedes, BMW or Navigator which all have better interiors.

GM is just rationalizing production to what the market demands now, not what worked a decade ago. Corvette will do the same.

The issue is GM is going to be looked at under a microscope now after these plant closings and lay offs.
Get your car now as they wont be around much longer. Unless you want a silent eletric car that you cant feel thats on and has no feeling what so ever that its actually running then youll be fine. This isnt a real good time to have GM all hyped up over a car that honestly wont sell very well.

My thoughts....not a chance that these layoffs will have any affect on the C8 or the Corvette line in general

Minor correction. The credit starts to phase out after 200,000 units sold. It doesn't immediately end.

How the electric car tax credit phase-out works is a bit complicated. It happens over a one-year period starting at the beginning of the second calendar quarter after the manufacturer hits the 200,000-unit threshold. At that time, the tax credit available to buyers drops to 50 percent of the original incentive available and continues at that level for the next two quarters. In the third and fourth quarter of the phase-out period, the tax credit drops to 25 percent of the original amount. After the phase-out period, no battery-electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid manufactured by the automaker is eligible for the tax credit.

Exactly right. The boycott drumbeat is building - admittedly its counter productive because it will hurt GM workers further. But the politics of this are going to poison part of the customer pool to other GM products. Barra will be gone in 6 months.

I wouldn't be completely shocked if it gets pushed back to a 2021 model released in '20, but still think there's a chance it comes out this time next year. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Well other makers who have a car that doesn't compete - improves it, doesn't just cancel it. The Bolt is going to be crushed by the Model3, right now Tesla is producing high option/expensive M3s to satisfy that segment of their customers. But they will transition production to the "stripper" M3 once those sales of the higher end model waiting lists are satisfied. Who would buy a Bolt when the Model3 is available without a 6 month wait and $60K price tag? Not too many people.
