You capture something very real to those of us of a certain age. If I had the budget and garage space, I think I would have a new cloth-top Miata (the 180HP one), MAYBE a '96 Porsche 911 coupe, and my C6 targa. 3 completely different driving experiences, all great fun and "visceral" in their own way. IMO the C6 makes a great DD, which is why that is my choice for now and likely will keep for years to come...

An addendum re the Miata -- have you driven any of them? 10 years ago my son had an NA which was fun but too slow. 4 years ago I test drove an NC -- it was "adequately" powered and a real blast -- but no way could I live with its size or low-torque 3K RPM @60MPH as a DD. I believe the new one might be 2850, but that is still nearly 4K at 80MPH which is average speed on interstates anymore...

New Porsche looks pretty much like the old Porsche, an inverted bathtub. I'm not saying it isn't a good car or that you shouldn't like it. It's just that they don't spend much on exterior design. It may as well still be 1963. A "retro Porsche" would be a contradiction of terms.

Not everyone wants over the top fighter jet styling like the C7 and taken to the extreme, C7 ZR1. Some love subtle speed... Porsche kills it. I can appreciate both.

I don’t see it that way,
No price change in new cars from 2009 and 2018,
most are the same, some are lower ,and very few are more expensive.

I've been in a few but not an ND. From what I understand, the ND is smaller on the outside and bigger on the inside. I'm not sure how this is possible. What I do know is there are some days I struggle to keep up with these mx5's at the autocross. They just floor them and steer. lol. I can't wait to try a newer one out.

Watched the 992 reveal today and the topspeed of the 992 911s is 191 mph...with a base price of the kost techically superior european product from germany..equals the top speed of my 2008 c6 z51 m6 which tops out at 190 mph....from the factory...

10 years and cohntless hours of fine german engineering gets the 2020 911s is capable of one mph than my 2008 c6 z1 manual.

love the new 992 porsche yet the corvette c8 z51 dct will be my choice. Thumbs up to porsche enthusiasts as all kidding aside the 992 seems awesome.

992 is a loser. Heavier, rear tail lights and brake light a mess, rear wing a mess, interior has that braun shaver nub for a shifter, hideous cupholder, roofline is lower giving a more claustrophobic greenhouse, big price increases, fake exhaust tips. 991 was a much sharper sports car.

While i agree that the rear is not great on the c7, the z06 with the stage 2 spoiler makes it look ok..... That said i spent 120k on a 19 z06 in canada over a 911 because i think the rest of the car looks better and sexier. The 911 while a great car, looks the same ss they have for a decade... no one notices them out here. The z06 is v definitely a handful at its limit. The 911 i think is much easier to drive fast for amateurs like me

Agree with your sentiment...and I have aged!
Driver engagement is getting lost as we move toward technology laden and autonomous vehicles.
Had a similar detached, video game-like experience with a R8 V10 Plus...great car but felt like a spectator in the driver’s seat.
Yep, I agree with ya!

Some call it timeless design, some call it bland and played out! And this is the first I've heard the C7 as being "cartoonish"! And some call it over-styled and some call it gorgeous and sexy!

And price no object, I would still take the Corvette over a 911! I The 911 may have a certain driving feel that some prefer (and some don't), the car doesn't do anything for me and way over-priced at over $100K! I do applaud Porsche for improving their interior quality in the 911 (they better for the amount they charge) and also their brilliant marketing for elevating the perception of their cars.

Same wheebase as the 991.2 (96.5in).
The new car might look similar to the outgoing model, too, but it’s 1.73 inches wider and about an inch longer than the outgoing model, despite having the same wheelbase.

Talk about stretching the truth!! If Porsche had to only rely on 911 sales it would be either out of business or bought out!

When equipped with Sport Chrono package with overboost and PDK, the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4S will sprint from 0-60 in a wicked quick 3.2 seconds, several tenths quicker than the model you can buy in showrooms right now.
Wow!

Here we go again with the "it's ugly and looks like the previous version" comments.
Porsche doesn't change body design significantly because they don't have to.
They'll sell every one that they make.
This does not apply to Corvette because GM knows they have to CONTINUOUSLY change body design or people won't stay interested.
It's a different mindset.
Look how many people dumped their C6's when the C7 came out.
Talk about not having a classic design that keeps people in their stable.
Honestly, it took years for the rear end of the C7 to become acceptable to me, as have all previous design changes that Corvette has gone thru.
I hated the C5 when it came out, but after quite a while I really liked the Z06 body style.
