Why is there even a Key Fob anyway?
The Tesla Model 3 opens the doors and starts the car with the presence of your smartphone. Recently, Lincoln announced that the upcoming Aviator will do the same thing. I see no reason for the key fob anymore. Everyone has a smartphone. Why are we seeing pictures of this outdated key fob for the C8? That's supposed to impress us? What's next, a leaked picture of a C8 Compact Disk player?

What if you want to let someone else drive your car? What if your phone breaks or dies? Phone only would be a bad idea IMO. Ability to use phone would be good but must have a fob backup

They have a credit card sized access card for backup that fits in you wallet. You just wave it by the card reader sensor.

What if you only wanted to open up your frunk? Or only have access to your motor? Or lower your HT’s top?
I am happy to have a key fob with many options selectable by placing only one finger in the right part of a key fob. And with its key inside of it (like the C7’s fob), giving me emergency access if the battery has died.

I'm all for consolidating devices and having less to carry around.
It will be interesting to see how vehicle access/operation evolves as companies like Tesla explore new approaches.
Perhaps we'll start seeing Apps for our cars, and the transition will be made/decided by owners. Kinda like choosing to (or not to) use Alexa to control certain household devices.
I'd be all for using my phone to replace a FOB, and still have the FOB as well (maybe as a safety net). If the FOB ends up "collecting dust"... and staying home... well, there you go.

Because the FOB also carries a physical key for getting into you car if the battery dies...so that a) you could get a jumpstart or b) you can replace the battery.
I like using my GM app on my phone to see all the statuses of my car, its location, and the included remote start from anywhere and unlock features...but a physical fob also allows you to have a physical "part" of the car to carry with you...it may be a placebo effect but I feel kimda naked when I dont have my fob in my pocket.

I would like to have both ... I am good with the mobile phone option but still like to have physical things. You need something to give valets, etc.

I have a new Ram and I can start, stop, unlock/lock, & set off the alarm with my phone app. Im sure a new vette will do that, if not then lol

Not everybody has a smartphone. E.G. My wife. And a few, very few, other folks I know, including a member of my Corvette club. Smartphone app would be nice but key fob backup is a must have.

If the car is a hybrid I'd imagine there would be a fail safe for the locks to be actuated by the hybrid cell... you can't not have something to get in when the phone is your only option and the battery is dead.

That would require me to keep the smartphone on and charged. I know it is common for people to be wedded to their phones in that manner, but I keep mine off unless I want to use it or unless having it on is pre-arranged. The phone is for my convenience, no on else's. They can leave voice mail. If you want to use a smart phone, that's great, but I don't want to be FORCED to use a phone to get into a car. To me, the whole idea is inconvenient. YMMV.
