Chatter in the paddock this weekend was that Chevy was there testing the TT C8 and that one crashed which caused the delay in them wrapping up and leaving on time. This was confirmed to me by a source I won't give any details on.

Someone needs to get a drone on stand-by in Danville
I trust there was no indication of injury to any personnel? Usually the general deminer of folks will indicate if something has happened of that type.

As for testing. Even though it's being done on a track, that's for privacy, safety and controlled conditions. This sort of testing is to dail in the necessary factors to keep those of us who might, possibly be driving beyond our capabilities on the street from injury to ourselves or others if at all possible. Those are street cars, not R cars.

Who said anything about straight piped or CAT-less or muffler-less?

It is likely the turbo has a different engine prior to the exhaust and a completely different exhaust.

So making any kind of judgement is simply premature. For example::
a) it could be quieter
b) it could be louder
c) it could be the same noise level but higher pitched
d) it could be the same noise level but different spectral density (both lower and higher).

EXACTLY! My original comment:
"Yeah, wasn't there video from a couple of weeks ago from out west with a fairly large group of cars together and one sounded much more aggressive? Wonder if it is the same group."

It made no assumptions about the sound, or the car that was in that video, or the car that wrecked, it was "is it the same group of cars". Yet... "all turbo cars must be quieter than the NA version".... How does it even relate? I didn't suggest the car from the video out west that was louder was turbo, or not turbo, or was the car that wrecked. But jeez, people read what they want to read on this forum.

No clue... I know David Farmer often is hired to drone fly at Ferrari HPDEs there.

Yes, my experience with the only turbo car I own (and still have) is that prior to installing my own turbo on my car, I have a high $ after market exhaust that sounded glorious at full song! When I installed my turbo, my car became significantly quieter, the only cool sound now is the blow off valve......

Don't know if that's the case. but the fact that you saw them where you did lines up perfectly with the C8 testing at VIR because you're so close to that track. Also, the area you live in is not a highly populated like the Raleigh/Wake County area. Good on you for snapping those photos when you did!

As a general rule of thumb (my earlier point about over-simplification) that is often the case. I've had similar setups and experiences, and I've also swapped out the exhaust for larger tubes and lower cell count cats and you could hear the turbos spinning much like you hear with a semi truck at idle. That was pretty cool, but the whole thing also got pretty annoying pretty quick too a full song. The joys of modding cars (and trucks).

In my experience, boost level also plays a huge part. If you strap a turbo on a stock NA engine (meaning you don't lower the compression) you are obviously limited to the amount of boost you can throw at it, so that can have an impact. One of my turbo builds from long ago was low static compression and VERY quiet until you got to about 3/4 of full boost and then it frickin screamed. Was kinda hard on cats however.

During races they might pop a TFR over the area but probably only during major events. Just as you can't fly aircraft around sporting events, same applies to drones. I've flown VFR over VIR when there was no race, I'm sure you can a drone. Just check NOTAMs when you plan to do it... Then post the videos of course.

Why does it matter? It's not like they're testing mules with no camo.

Wonder what part of the car they are from and what they are hiding?

Given the lack of fragmentation, this lends credence to the suggestion that they are hiding some parts of the design with fake panels. This might be one of those fake panels... Interesting. I suspect GM will be reaching out to your friend.

One a serious note, if there was a crash hopefully there were no injuries to those involved. At a private track rental I attended where the crash involved the worse outcome possible....it took hours for the investigation to be completed.

Based on the scale of the camo pattern, we can make a good guess about the size of the panel. Given it's shape (the curved cutout) to me it looks like the panel disguising the side air intake / door cut line. Interesting that it is bumped out to a fair degree.

Looks like a camo panel, ask if there is velcro or double sided sticky foam tape on the back.
