GM to Add Second Shift and More Than 400 Hourly Jobs at Bowling Green (Ky.) Assembly Plant

Since 2011, GM has invested more than $900 million in Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Ky. — General Motors is adding a second shift and more than 400 hourly jobs at its Bowling Green (Kentucky) Assembly plant to support production of the Next Generation Corvette, which will be revealed on July 18, 2019.

The addition of the second shift will increase the plant’s workforce to more than 1,300.

“The Corvette’s iconic status owes so much to the men and women of Bowling Green, where it has been built exclusively for almost 40 years,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “This is the workforce that can deliver a next generation Corvette worthy of both its historic past and an equally exciting future, and today’s announcement gets us one step closer to its reveal on July 18.”

Since 2011, GM has invested more than $900 million into Bowling Green. This includes investments towards a new body shop, increased engine capacity, new paint shop, a new Performance Build Center, and additional plant upgrades.

Bowling Green Assembly has produced more than one million Corvettes since it opened in 1981. The plant has the largest solar array of any automaker in Kentucky, and its annual economic impact includes more than $76 million in state wages and $15 million in income tax.

Known around the world as America’s sports car, the first-generation Corvette was introduced as a 1953 model year. Originally designed as a show car for the 1953 Motorama display at the New York Auto Show, it generated enough interest to go into production.

The seventh and most current generation Corvette was revealed in January 2013 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was the first to bring back the Stingray nameplate since 1976. The final production seventh generation Corvette will be auctioned off this summer with proceeds benefitting the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

General Motors (NYSE:GM) is committed to delivering safer, better and more sustainable ways for people to get around. General Motors, its subsidiaries and its joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Cadillac, Chevrolet, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang and Wuling brands. More information on the company and its subsidiaries, including OnStar, a global leader in vehicle safety and security services, Maven, its personal mobility brand, and Cruise, its autonomous vehicle ride-sharing company, can be found at http://www.gm.com.

All they announced was 400 additional jobs at the plant. Not sure where the price of the car comes into play?

If anything, the job increase and ant expansion means the C8 will be cheap. Definitely not super expensive. GM is not at full capacity with a $57K car, why would they increase capacity by a huge amount to make a $150K car?? Doesn't make sense. The ME will be $80K at most if there is a FE. If no new FE, the C8 will not be above $65K

Where does it say they won't make a new generation FE? Where does it say that all Corvettes in the future will be ME?

Back in 2010 the Viper had a similar article..

https://www.allpar.com/cars/viper/last-2010-viper.html

Rauh’s Viper is the last of the current-generation Vipers built at the plant. Dodge has created more special-edition Viper models for the 2010 model year than all other model years since production started in 1992.

No mention of any engine building, the production of a FE Corvettes other brand vehicles..., just two shifts of Next generation Corvettes and the final production of the C7.

Are you folks like this IRL, or do you just reserve the weirdness for your time spent on the internet?

Where does it say they won't make a solar powered model with a balsa wood body? Where does it say they won't make a Silverado Z06? Maybe we need them to deny they're making one that flies?

Ah, I see. The announcement doesn't explicitly say they won't, therefore they will! Absence now means confirmation!

Thats how it works around here...
There could be corvette limo, corvette Hearst ,Corvette personal Flyer...it’s all possible till GM says they won’t do it.

On a serious note ...I just got word that Mattel intends to keep building the FE pink Barbie Corvette for a few more years....apparently she needs the extra cargo capacity for shopping...
I guess the guys had a point all along...

Anyone else notice that this C8 has no Spoiler? This should make a lot of the "that spoiler runs it for me" crowd happy...

Only problem is that they put that spoiler under the door....

Because they are going to build a lot more of them initially just as with every generation. Nearly 40K C6s and C7s were produced annually in the first couple of years after introduction utilizing multiple shifts. Contrast that with about 20K C7s being produced annually today. GM is most likely planning to build about double that number of C8 MEs in the first year.
