Maybe it it is a form of DOD. One oil pump runs 4 cylinders one cam. Then when it turns on all 8 cylinders the other oil pump activates and locks the chain together. After everything is spinning the lifters turn back on with oil pressure. Maybe is is a way to get around auto start stop by just running 4 cylinders at idle.
