Default Dealer added markups on the C8

It will be interesting to see if dealers are going to mark up the C8 over the MSRP initially and if people will actually buy them over MSRP. Personally I would never pay over MSRP for a car as nearly every car depreciates very fast. Not to mention in a year or two you will see the base C8 selling for $10k off MSRP.

However if the dealers can get people to buy them over MSRP then good for them. That is the way capitalism works.

Thanks!

For the base model C8? Anyone would be literally insane to pay more than MSRP for an unlimited production base model...

I cannot imagine dealers even trying to put any "dealer markup" on a base C8. If you find one, just drive on down the road and find another dealer!

There were dealers in my area that were marking up the base C7 in the first year by $5k or more. I ended up having to drive 300 miles to Miami to find one at MSRP that I wanted.

MSRP. or no business. These things will be mass produced. Never pay mark ups for a Vette.

There is no doubt that some dealers will be marking up over MSRP (there seems to be a few areas of the country where this is more common than others).

There is also no doubt that SOMEONE will pay more than MSRP.

Finally, there should be no doubt that it will not be hard to find one of the great forum vendors here, put your name on the list, and get one at MSRP in a (somewhat) reasonable timeframe after launch.

Enthusiasts here know how to get one at MSRP.

Some people (that may include people in the fourm - not passing judgement) will not want to deal with it, have enough money that they don't care, and will walk into a dealer and pay more than MSRP to leave with it that day.

Starling Chevrolet in Orlando quoted me $20K over MSRP for a C8 and was accepting $5K right of refusal deposits. Yes, I walked out the door. Then I went to Don Mealey Chevrolet in Clermont, FL. This dealer is not imposing an up charge nor did they request a deposit at this time. Not only did I register for their C8 wait list, within a week of visiting, I purchased a 2019 GS 3LT from them.

Simply stated, Starling lost not just one sale, but potentially two sales.

Happens on every new model. Plenty of people with more money than brains that are willing to pay to be first.

Of course they will. If there is more demand than supply dealers will likely charge ADM and/or also charge for things like paint and interior protection packages, window tint, Lo-Jack, etc, etc.

If you absolutely positively have to have a brand new 1st edition and can afford it, by all means go for MSRP. But, if you have little patience, remember what a friend of mine said to me many years ago. My friend owned a very nice car dealership and when we met for lunch one day I proudly showed him the nice new car I had just bought.

His only response was, “MSRP? You paid MSRP? I own a dealership and always buy 1 to 2 year old used cars with very low miles. Let some other sucker take the $5,000 to $15,000 first year hit.”

Always trying to keep that in mind, we occasionally do buy new cars, but we generally wait for super deals. At a time when new 1994 ZR-1s were selling for MSRP and over, I found several new maxed out ZR1s going for $18,000 under MSRP due to inventory issues due to ZF transmission production problems. Similarly, we bought our brand new 2013 CTS V for $12,000 under MSRP at the end of the model year. Excess inventory issues. The main trick is being able to be a little patient and then act fast with cash.

In that same vein, wow are there some pretty amazing C7 GS and Z06 deals out there now and probably many more better deals coming.

Does that mean we won’t pay MSRP for a new C8? Not necessarily... We’ll see... But if we do we certainly won’t be bragging about paying MSRP.

There will be dealers adding markups and selling them for more than MSRP. Nature of the beast. There is always the buyer that will pay whatever the dealer is asking for a car that can be purchased on the spot with no waiting in line. Happens all the time and will happen with this car as well.

I won't be seriously considering until June 2020 - that is when my current car lease ends. I hope to get some kind of a discount by then. depends on when the first cars hit dealers

Or below.

However, people are stupid and will buy local on impulse and pay stupidly rather than doing their homework. Particularly non-tech savvy buyers who tend to shop, negotiate, and buy the old way they always have. And dealerships can smell these guys coming a mile away, and will stand buy their locally added-on mark up stickers. Weird, I know. Add to that, Bumfaulk Chevrolet in Bumfaulk, IA may get one C8 allocation, and to them, it IS a rocketship, and they're willing for it to sit in the showroom and collect dust.

Makes no sense to pay a markup. It would be cheaper, more fun to fly (or however) to an out of state dealer and road trip it back home. That’s how I would do it! Most one-way flights are $200 or so. Book yourself a nice hotel, land, make the deal, drive around town then have a giant steak and a good whiskey/scotch, tell the valet “Nice try” as you pull into the hotel for night. Sleep, then hit the road with your lady or best buddy and watch as people gawk and take pics. You’ll be the kind of the road for a day.

The over MSRP depends on where you live? I guess in Florida, Texas, Vegas, and California dealers can get away with it? If you're lucky enough to live in the Northeast where the three largest Corvette dealers are located that will not fly!!!

This. I can assure you the friendly Kalifornia dealers will be adding a minimum of $10K.

In the spring of 2014 I was living in Northern CA, and the dealer in Vallejo was asking $20,000 over sticker. I found a stingray in Ohio for $2,000 below sticker. Flew to Columbus, picked up by Rick Conti, and on my way in an hour.
