Little birdie says no vert at reveal tonight, but will be mentioned, base price $60K
Birdie who has been feeding info says the convertible will not be at the reveal tonight (I'm surprised and disappointed, given we've seen the car in the teasers). He says it may be reference. Says the car is "amazing in person", but of course he says that as he probably works for GM . Says the base price is "right at $60K" whether that means $59,999 or $62K I don't know, but it's not going to be a $65K or $69,999 base car.

Not really sure why people think moving the engine to the rear would cause a huge increase in price. Its still a Chevy car utilizing parts created using standard production procedures.

They always get you in on "base" price. We all know the cool versions with options will cost more. My little birdie still tells me the top of the line car in a few years will be $180K

Its because the Camaro has gotten better, and more expensive along the way. The Camaro and Corvette now occupy/overlap too much of the pricing territory, and the move to a mid-engine 'supercar' design is probably the justification they need to bump the Corvette up to be positioned move "above" the Camaro.
Its a product line differentiation thing.
Forget about the Corvette for a second, here's another example. A Jeep Wrangler is a mid-$50k vehicle now. In 1997 when the TJ came out, the MSRP was $14k. You can point to inflation, but my point is that it now competes in a different class. Back in 1997, the Wrangler had an MSRP that matched up against a Corolla. Now you can cross-shop a JLU against a straight-up luxury SUV from Mercedes or BMW. That's what I mean about moving up-market. Does that have anything to do with the parts or production process getting harder? No, its still an FCA product. So why do they charge that kind of money? Because they can. Marketing, popularity, etc have put the Wrangler in that spot, and it apparently justifies that price.

^^^ You know the Camaro is being discontinued... Corvette's not going anywhere, it's at the perfect price point.

I think the Corvette will move up-market. But its not because of mid-engine, or better performance, or any of that.

TH, I hope your connection is spot-on! I've heard that everyone that has already seen the cars says it's amazing too.

Yep, the tea leaves strongly suggest that Chevrolet is moving toward a strategy of only one high performance car, which will be available in a broad range of performance and price ranges.

Your jeep comparison points out the reality. Base wrangler is still just $28k, yet whenever anyone talks about them, they say they are now $50k+ vehicles. The C8 will be the same way, but with the numbers doubled. Base price $60k? Sure. realistic price of base model with typical options? $80k+. Fully loaded stingray will be flirting with $100k.
