Default Bespoke DCT

I don't think this has been posted. A lot of volume in C.F. today.

Did anyone notice in one of the GM videos Tadge said they had to create a new bespoke DCT because nothing off the shelf could handle the torque? Obviously there are a lot of DCTs that can handle 500hp + Thoughts?

Remember that transmissions don't care about HP. They care about input torque. Finding a DCT that A)fits, B)is affordable, and C)can withstand the input torque is basically impossible; which is why they worked with TREMEC for this one.

There are many DCT's can handle > 500hp AND torque. Rewind 15 years ago it wasn't the case

"affordability" factor was key

Bespoke makes sense, remember a couple years back when the word came out GM was ordering 30k units. That is a lot of units! It would make sense to custom design the tranny with the supplier for that kind of volume.

The idea is to use one transmission in all the models. The higher performance variant is going to need to handle a lot more than 650Nm.

Plus remember, this transmission is going to have to handle the torque input of the HiPo models as well which will almost certainly be well above 500 lb/ft.

Not mentioned...

Bespoke today does not mean bespoke tommorow follows hand in hand; at this time we don't know when or if it will find is way into something else. We do know that getting it into other vehicles would reduce costs per unit and GM isn't shy about reducing costs. Keep in mind that DCTs work extremely well in gas-electric hybrids so potential installations are not necessarily limited to a sports car.

Then you've got packaging; on the shelf hardware may not have met GMs packaging needs and then required substantial redesign or changes in the proposed installations.

Bespoke in the same sense of the eLSD from the C7. It then went on to go into a bunch of platforms from the Camaro to CTS-V. That DTC may become a thing across the board.
