Default New HTC problem

Took delivery a few weeks ago and have 700 miles on the car. Put the top down a couple times and third time I put it down I heard a loud slamming noise that sounded like the rear window was shattered.
I stopped the operation mid-way and noticed the passenger side Nacelle was out straight and the drivers side was tucked under as it should have been. When trying to close the top, the passenger Nacelle hit the roof of the car since it wouldn’t retract. Luckily it didn’t do any paint damage on the roof.
Upon inspection found that the wire that attaches to the nacelle had slipped out of the plastic holder where it’s anchored. I tried to put it back in but it’s under rather high tension so I took it to the dealer and they were able to fix it in a couple minutes.
while I was there they also did a decent job aligning the little roof panel on the lancer side that people are mentioning has a bigger gap than the drivers side.

The cover on the Plastic box slide down and the wire was able to slide out. It’s under tension so when it popped out it was loud and sounded terrible. Luckily no damage and quick fix.

Wow that is really weird. I have used mine at least 100 times since owning it and no problems at all.

Glad it was fixed easily.

Thankfully it was a quick and somewhat easy fix.

I have a 2021 HTC and I'm at the dealership having the same problem repaired as I write. My driver side cable just snapped off with a bang. I was surprised the cable used as an actuator is like a bicycle shifter cable. All that holds it is a 3/8" flat lead bonded to the end of the cable and held inside that box you show in your second photo. Mine scuffed the roof a bit but I polished it out.

Not pretty when this happens!

Thank you very much for posting this. Sounds like an assembly issue. Maybe the person who normally does this job was out sick, and the substitute wasn't as good.

Glad to hear it was easily fixed.

Probably not a bad idea to inspect that plastic cover once in a while to make sure it is still moved all the way to the locking side and hasn't slid down.

So this is good information, and happy for you that it was repaired quickly. I'm wondering that if this happened out of the 36/36 B2B warranty and one had in place the GMEPP warranty, would that cover repairs? Reading the GMEPP it does not sound like it would be covered. From the exclusion list I found, "any convertible top assemblies, hardware or linkages". That's the part that concerns me as there's a lot of gears and "stuff" in the HTC which might fail. Just something to think about, it wouldn't change my mind on not getting a HTC.

All and all it was an easy fix, but just hate leaving the car with the dealership. But my C8 delivered 12/22/20 and I put the roof down many times before the cable broke. The first time the plastic cable cover end popped out of its land, so I pressed it back and zip tied it. The second time was a fail and the cable pulled out of the lead hat. So I'm thinking rather than an assembly issue, it's mechanically under engineered. That box shown in a previous photo has a spring load inside and when the roof retracts it applys a great deal of torque on that actuator cable. I'm no engineer, but I think the actuator cable should be 30% heavier cable and the lead hat replaced with a mechanical connection ... like a B&M auto shift cable.

Is this a lube on the cable type fix if it binds up? Or is this a kink in the cable from a design flaw?

Man hoping the HTC doesn't grow an issue that affects them all and this is just a few bad parts not engineered with inferior parts or design.

No, there's nothing to lube. The cable just pulled out from its cast in place flat lead slug. If you can remember what a bicycle brake cable looks like, it has a lead cylinder that attaches to the hand brake ... imagine the cable pulling out from that lead slug. That's what happens when this cable goes. Aside from having to spend a day at the dealership to diagnose, a week for the part to come in and another day at the dealership to nstall, it's a quick fix.

Thread may be old but the person that brought it back is having the same issue, now, on a 2021.

I commend them for using the search function successfully.

Mine has transmission issues. Now potentially this? Will keep an eye on this. OP had the cable pull apart from the cable end. Wow, lot’s of pulling pressure there I assume. Others in other threads report the entire cable, stop and all, pulled out from a plastic retaining box the cable end resides in, so it seems two issues are rearing their ugly heads.

My 2021 HTC wire for the Nacelle on the passenger side broke and they tied it closed and ordered a replacement wire. That was 2 months ago.
Another friend has a 2020 HTC that the same wire broke and is on back order also. Sounds like they need a fix to the wiring issue.

Simple... they just need to design stuff ever more complicated so that increasingly simple faults can have potentially unpredictable and catastrophic effects!
