Default C8 PDR SD Card

Does anyone know the max speed and size (micro, or std) SD Card and the amount of Gigs the C8's PDR can format?

I use different brands. SanDisk, Lexmark, Sony are all reliable brands. There are other good brands, too, which you can find of various capacities on Amazon, Best Buy or even Walmart. Costco also carries SD cards. Just don’t use a generic brand. The important thing is it MUST BE a Class 10 card. If it is, it will have a 10 in a circle on the label. It should also have a transfer rate of at least 80 MB/sec, also spelled out on the label. SD cards will say SDCard or SD on the label. They’re rectangular with a diagonal notch on one corner. I don’t recommend MicroSD cards because they require an adapter to fit in the PDR memory slot. Just my personal preference based on the KISS axiom.

You can format exFAT in Windows. You need an SD Card reader. Many laptops have them built in. Some desktops do, as well. If not, you can pick up cheap card readers on Amazon that will connect using USB. Just make sure it can read/write SD cards. Simply insert the SD card in the reader. SD cards are usually pre-formatted in FAT32. Click on My Computer. You’ll open a window showing your hard drive(s) and any periferals, such as DVD or Blu-ray readers/writers. The SD card reader will be in this window, also. Left double-click on it to make sure there are no files you want to keep. If it’s a new SD card, it will be empty. Right-click on the SD card reader icon and you’ll get a drop-down list. One of the things on that list will be Format or Format Drive. MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON THE CARD READER AND NOT A HARD DRIVE! Left-click Format on the drop-down list and it will give you choices, such as NTFS, FAT32 and exFAT. Select exFAT and follow the instructions. You can do either a Quick Format or a Full Format. Either will work but Quick Format will be, uh, quicker. If it won’t format, it might be write-protected. There is a little slide switch on the side of the SD card. If the card is write-protected, slide the switch to unprotected it. New cards won’t be write-protected from the package.

I hope this was helpful for you. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner.

There has been a few threads on this topic. GM recommends a Class 10 SD card with a minimum of 16 GB. I would recommend the SanDisk Ultra with 64 GB at a minimum.

Perhaps you meant a 256GB card. 256MB won't hold that much video.

I went on Amazon to look for 256MB cards, and was surprised to find them. Even more surprised by the price. Some were at $22. You can 256GB cards for the same or less!

well I bought and installed a 256 GB SD card and set it up to record at the highest resolution and it shows it has 1000 minutes (16.66 hours) of recording space on it. I have yet to go out and use it but will this Thursday.

Size doesn't much matter like it did in the C7. The C8 will overwrite older movies.

No way to know what you are getting on Amazon. I hear so many fake reports, but I don't know how many are true or just others trying tactics to sell their higher priced stuff.

I have the SD card I posted above from Amazon and it appears NOT to be a fake. The capacity and function is as it is supposed to be. I just wish I had the PDR set to record sound vs off when I first set it up. If I had, it would have captured the sound of my trunk opening on its own when I backed out of my garage. It was during the FOB controversy before the OTA update. Yes my fob was not touched, face up in my arm rest. Again, this was my trunk, not the Frunk. I heard it open, but unfortunately no sound was able to be recorded to prove it to anyone besides me. The PDR did catch the entire electrical system have a momentary spike - off then back on in a sub-second reaction timeframe.

It would have been nice to convince the sceptics that there sure are electrical gremlins running around. My 2016 Malibu with few miles has been giving me all sorts of fake failure notices and then disappearing after e few engine restarts. It was the only item that made me think twice about buying another GM product. Still glad i have my Game changer.

So I don't have any problem with an SD card from Amazon.

Default How do you get an exFat OS to format bigger than 32gb?

I believe your 256gb card is only being formatted to 32gb, the max exFat file system can do. Buying larger is a waste isn’t it?

Incorrect. The maximum recommended partition size of xFAT is 512 TB. Any current size SD card can be fully utilized in exFAT. FAT32 has a 4 GB limitation, but PDR cards must be formatted in exFAT.

Hope that clarifies it.

Owners manual says
To begin, insert an exFAT formatted SD card, Class 10 required, 16 GB or larger recommended, into the glove box SD card reader.

PERFORMANCE DATA RECORDER QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE says
TO BEGIN, INSERT AN SD CARD INTO THE GLOVE BOX SD CARD READER (OWNER’S MANUAL: 7-1) • FAT32 Formatted and Class 10 (8GB, 16GB or 32GB recommended)

Hmm, which is true?

exFAT is correct. In the C7, the PDR would ONLY read exFAT. I can’t see why FAT32, which is an older and much more size-limited File Allocation Table (FAT) formatting method, would be used in the C8. Also, I used a 512 GB SD card in my C7 and it worked just fine, giving thousands of minutes of recording time. I can’t imagine GM would go backward in storage method or size. I think the technical writer probably made a mistake in the Reference Guide.

Instead of buying a larger card (256-512 etc) I would buy a couple of 32 GB, or max 64 GB cards if your using the PDR as a dash cam.

The logic is the time it takes to download & view specific files. It takes physically & electronically longer to search & locate.

Picture going from a single two drawer office file cabinet to a room filled with four drawer office cabinets.

I only use my PDR on the track. I bought two 32GB cards for cheap. One card is more than enough for five 30 minutes sessions. Having a spare lets me take my time transfering the files to my laptop.

Just cause its BIGGER, doesnt mean its better.

Default Would a SDXC below work?

Sounds like I should use a 256GB and change it out often so it is easier to find the file but I would not overwrite the fit if I forgot. SanDisk 256GB SDXC SD Ultra Memory Card Works with Canon EOS Rebel T7,...
