Received an email from Chevrolet Navigation Team (Chevrolet@navupdates.navigation.com) that a NEW NAVIGATION MAP UPDATE IS AVAILABLE. "First time it is available - LOL.
Anyone taking up the offer? $99 vs $149. You can get a decent gps with lifetime updates for that price. Not to mention Google maps with car play or android auto.
I use my iPhone for navigation. I like it a lot better than the navigation built into the car. And with wireless carPlay, it's a no-brainer. I'll Let Apple update their navigation software at no charge.

I'd never pay for a map update , I get those emails all the time from GM. Scam lol, there are too many GPS alternatives that don't require you spending money on a map update.
I agree with all of the above. This was discussed at length during the 2020 Discussions, but this is the first time an update has been offered - to me at least. I'd rather have waze on the infotainment screen and maps on my android.
In today's age of Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, etc. I am constantly amazed why manufactures bother going through the effort to update the maps for a fee. It would seem to me that it would leave a bad taste in most customer's mouths for something so little.

Because there's always some poor sucker who's gonna buy it lol. " oh look , a map update ..it must be something I need so my entire car system isn't out of date lol"
I'm honestly surprised car companies still spend a dime on proprietary navigation systems. There is no value add and who wants to deal with learning a new, cumbersome interface?

GM on board or their third party vendor maps will never be as current as Apple/Android maps. Or a Garmin standalone. Nor as easy to use. You have Car Play and Android Play that will display those maps on your info screen. Of course, you need a compatible smart phone.
Maps eat up data allotments pretty quickly. If you have a restrictive phone data plan, for a couple hundred bucks, you can get a decent Garmin with lifetime map updates. We have a Garmin Nuvi 1490 purchased 10 years ago that came with lifetime free updates. Connect via USB to your PC and follow the bouncing ball. It is portable and can be used separate from the car. A great travel GPS as it is not dependent on WiFi or our data plan. We still use it today on the road.

Phone nav are great as long as you have connection to a tower. Without a connection unable to set a new destination.
percy
The Here app referenced above lets you download maps for virtually the entire world (by individual states or countries) and works completely offline once you do.
I keep it on my phone as an emergency Nav option if I find my self without a data connection.

Since April 1st Google maps has used 711 MB, and Waze has used 245 MB on my Android phone. That includes constant use during a 5 day trip from Northern Virginia to Lexington and Bowling Green, local travel in those places, and back. As well as a round trip to Philly and Princeton, and plenty of local usage. Less than a GB in 4 months doesn't seem like a lot to me. You can download maps to the phone over Wi-Fi, and then all you're using data for most of the time is traffic info and warnings. (The numbers above don't represent having downloaded maps, either.)
