Default Radar Detector Location

I know there have been several threads on this topic. Most address the Blend Mount mirror mount. Here is the spot in the C8 that worked for me. I purchased this particular mount from Amazon for less than $12.00. The Escort 10' power cord, terminating in a cigarette light plug was about another $10.00, also from Amazon. Total installation time (including snaking the wire) was about 15 minutes. I apologize in advance for not including the link for the mount in this thread. For some reason I can't find it in my Amazon "purchases" folder, but with some effort, you should be able to find it...Cheers...

I put my phone on that little panel just to left of the turn signal stalk in your picture. A suction cup WILL stick there even tho it's textured. Of course if falls off in couple of days, but that's just fine as that way there are no permanent marks.

My radar detector, fed from the mirror power, used to be just to the left of the mirror mount, on suction cups, but I didn't like how visible it was from outside the car. Same with using the BLEND MOUNT under the mirror. It's just too inviting and visible (to the constabulary) for my taste. I'm too lazy to remove it (I have one in each car rather than move one back and forth) so mine is now on the VISOR, just to the right of the leftmost garage button.

Since I have never owned a radar detector and since I will soon be a proud owner of a C8. Should I be rethinking that philosophy?

Do you plan to be doing things that would benefit you greatly to have advanced warning of police presence ahead? Than yes, lol.

You generally want a radar detector mounted up high with no obstructions front/rear. With the location you have it, you may miss signals from the rear.

That is true; it is also in direct sight of the local constabulary and potential thieves. However, this placement for me was a tradeoff. I just did not like it anywhere else in the cockpit (and I am a long time Blend Mount guy)...

I feel like I am working with some shady characters. JK. Thanks for the advice.

Another added expense. Any suggestions for the rookie?

Even if you are driving with the flow of traffic (which often averages 10mph+ higher than the speed limit here in Florida interstate travel), you will be the one that gets singled out for the ticket.
Better to know he is there and slow down to let someone else pay the highway tax.

I mount mine to the top of the windshield with a view of the rear (because it is a V1 G2 with front/rear detection) and dash mount won't work. I hard wire into the camera connector of the rear view.
I just took the coiled wire and fed it through the plastic cover (a very convenient knock out/rubber plug is there from the factory!), then crimped on some pins and put some heat shrink over them so they aren't exposed once installed.

Which is why I also run a dashcam and take down my detector if I'm in a questionable area. My current setup in my BRZ is mounted up near the mirror, but the top windshield is dark and masks the detector. Hoping I can do a similar set up when I get my C8. I don't like the blendmount, it's too obnoxious where it puts the detector for me.

I mounted mine above my infotainment screen. Yes, the best location is high and centered. But above the infotainment screen has minimal reduction in range, even from the rear which is generally less important anyway. I was driving around with it on the passenger floor doing some testing and it was still detecting things at a reasonable range. And it is completely free of obstructing the view out the windshield.

When I'm parked and don't feel like removing it I throw a hat over it.

I have velcro on the top of my info screen and the detector balances nicely with clear line of sight both front and back. Redline 360c has worked well so far.

I use mine for situational awareness. I'm not a big speeder but I don't always follow the letter of the law either. Some examples:

You're exceeding the speed limit but going with the flow of traffic. A LEO doesn't like the flow of traffic and wants to pull over a car to make an example. You're the only sports car in a sea of sedans and SUVs. You'd make a good example.
I will gradually pull out of the flow of traffic if I get a radar hit and think the flow is going fast enough for someone to be ticketed.

In my state you have to give 3 feet of clearance to go around a bicyclist but it is illegal to put two wheels over the double yellow line.
I'll stay behind the bicyclist until I can get by without putting two wheels over the double yellow line if my detector is going off.

You're one of multiple cars behind a person that is going well below the speed limit in a two lane road and is oblivious to the signs for slower cars to use the turn-outs. You get a break in the double yellow line with a white dashed line allowing passing. You'll need to exceed the legal speed limit to safely get around the slow car.
I won't make the pass if my radar detector is going off.

You want it high up for radar detection but as low as possible for a chance at that little bit of laser beam being aimed at your headlights.

I got my FIRST radar detector when they dropped the speed limit from 70 mph to 55 during the "gas crisis". Back then all I wanted to do was the 70 mph that the freeways were designed for. I did without once they raised the limits back up again, BUT when I got my Fiesta ST in 2014 I knew I had to have one once again. It's NOT that I constantly speed, BUT for those times when the road is clear, OR that the traffic is moving well below what I would like to be doing, (say 75 in a 70 mph) and a hole opens up, it's critical to KNOW that there is NOT a constable gunning the road. .. Also as someone has mentioned, on two lane roads where everyone is afraid (for some reason, I don't get it at all) to make ANY pass ----I just came back from Spring Mountain. There are roads with MILES long straights, and NO ONE would pass. A string of 6 cars following one slow mover, going at least 5 mph UNDER the limit and NO ONE MOVED This happened over and over again, but I digress-----. It's good to know that punching it up to well above the legal limit (As I understand it, it is illegal to go over the speed limit EVEN to pass on a two lane road) that there is NOT some cop with a radar gun on that particular stretch of road. But I digress...

It's important to get a GOOD, better a GREAT radar detector. A cheap one will give you false sense of security, but nothing beats COMMON SENSE in how you use it.
If you never plan to exceed the posted limit, and don't plan to track your car, what's the point of a 'vette to begin with?
As the old MG motto said

SAFETY FAST!

If you want laser protection, get an ALPS unit. By the time your radar detector indicates a laser hit, you've already been tagged.
