Default EPass Update - Status

Originally I mounted my Epass using the suction cups to the underside of the Frunk Hood because it was flat, assumed best RF working conditions, .... BUT just like a Radar Detector, they will loose grip and make the item fall off. In this case, down into the frunk cave. Upon further analysis, I rotated it 90 degrees and attached it using Velcro with double sided tape. Excellent mounting, plus it is removable with ease as/if necessary.

This was many moons ago, but I finally had the opportunity to test it yesterday gong to Miami. Being that it is an EPass and not a SunPass, I had to wait overnight for the SunPass transactions (Miami uses a different system) to be uploaded and transferred from SunPass to Epass. Every Toll (5) registered.

This not only proved it should (it was not actually tested on Epass itself) work for Epass, but also on other systems that use transponders that accept Epass.

Yes, I still have/use my Frunk Manual Backup! If it was a daily driver with repeated required opening operations, maybe not, but it is NBD to me. Personal Choice - just sayin'

Good info! I just hold mine up, which can be annoying.

Interestingly, I was recently in Newport, RI and a bridge there had signs saying that an unmounted EZ Pass is charged more on that particular bridge. That did not turn out to be the case and I was curious how they would know?

@C8J Good to know. I have the EPass sticker - I wonder how that would work in the frunk area. Thanks for the update.

I think what that notice was trying to convey is that if an EZPass transponder is not read, you are charged more if they have to read your plate and cross reference it to a registered vehicle in their system.

I kept my EZPass in the C7 cubby behind the center screen, but I know that option doesn't exist in C8. It worked most of the time in that location, and I think it would probably work even better mounted to the underside of the frunk lid.

I opted for the "bigger" bar because I didn't want anything permanently mounted- windshield or otherwise.

Also, the bigger bar allows for multi state (eastern US currently) use. I do not think that the sticker does.

Based on my experience, the sticker "should" work attached to the hood underside, but until someone reports it works, it is still an unknown.

The reason all of this is possible is due to fiberglass vs metal that would probably act as a shield to rf transmission.

We do not have toll roads here in Missouri, but for those that do, your solution to mounting the device sounds like it will work well. And it is in a pretty convenient location.

why didn't you just use the 3M mounting tape? Already has the velcro with removable backing.

Clever solution OP. I may need to try. I do loathe the “big white turd” on the windshield, but I just spray paint mine flat black and it disappears behind my windshield. Done.

I just tossed mine in the glovebox. Never failed on any of my vehicles.

Worse case, it doesn't read and they scan my plates I have on file with the IPASS.

I considered that location, but wanted it out of the weather and WATER environment.

I considered this solution too, but some places (Gov Agencies) add surcharges if they have to read your plates.

Frankly, I put this out there because some posted that they desired feedback (from an earlier thread on the subject matter) from my mounting in the Frunk. This is why many DO NOT POST. Anytime someone posts, someone else posts how their solution is better. Use it or not - Your choice, but I do not need to be told how to make my choice unless there is a defect I had not thought of. I will gladly welcome the information/suggestion then. There are two ways to go around the block - left turns or right turns. Unless a special condition exists like it is a one way, either is OK. No need to discuss walking, bicycles, helicopters, or ....

Almost the same place mine is. I have it on the more vertical part, just above there. Hasn't failed to read yet.

[QUOTE=C8J;1604233287]I considered that location, but wanted it out of the weather and WATER environment.

Where mine is, at least, it's never gotten wet, an I've driven through some real monsoons. I've also used them on motorcycles, and being "in the environment" doesn't seem to bother them at all. I think they're completely sealed.

C8J,
I put my sunpass mini in the same place you did under the frunk lid.
I used velcro like you did to secure it to the roof of the frunk.

I tried it out on the 429 last week and all three times it registered my new transponder. Good to go.

one less thing to have to see or worry about. At least for 5 or so years. Then R&R will be no problem and take all of 30 seconds - 29 to reapply velcro to the new one and 1 to put it back on.

Audi is incorporating a 'universal transponder' feature into their new cars. I suspect this will become mainstream soon enough.

I finally took my C8 into Orlando using the Xpwy. I just checked as the tolls there post immediately vs requiring an overnight from outside the area. All tolls were as expected - no problem with the Epass being located in the Frunk. Pic for refresher as to what (Epass UNI)/ where (Frunk Lid Vertical)/ how (Velcro tape) I attached it.

I did mine the same way and works great around the O town area.
