Seems silly to me that the rear camera is disabled while moving considering the lack of good rear visibility from behind the car. Why can I have a mirror camera going all the time but not the rear camera? Given the texting pandemic I like to pay a lot of attention to what is going on behind me so that I do not get rear ended. Long shot, I know, but does anyone know of a way of defeating the control?

You can. Here is the process. Start car and put it in drive. Hit the front camera button. Once the image comes up hit the far left rear camera icon. When you start to drive it will likely switch back to front camera. If it does just hit the far left rear camera icon and you will have a constant view of the rear camera while driving at any speed. I did this the other day. Worked fine.

Interesting workaround for the rear camera. Just curious though - doesn’t the camera view in the rear view mirror provide a constant view like you are seeking? I do not have a C8 so have not seen the view presented in the rear view mirror.

For one, the rearview mirror camera doesn't provide a full-front view of the car sitting on your bumper at a traffic signal like the back-up camera. While the rearview camera has its advantages, the images are not the same as a mirror. I know that I can't discern faces of occupants in cars sitting behind me at a traffic signal like I can in a mirror.

Do the tilt and zoom controls on the mirror not solve those issues?
Maybe because it is an additional distraction. Now instead of looking forward and using some of your peripheral vison to look at the rear-view mirror, you will be looking down at the main display. Instead of tracking four visual areas (each side mirror, rear view "mirror") now you will add another the other rear view main display.
I haven't tried the work around, but maybe I will try it to see if I think it would really help. In a low traffic area of course.

The OP may have a 1LT, which is why he is asking if he can use the backup camera full time. With the 1LT, there is no front camera so this method won't work.
I have the 3LT, haven't tried the work around yet, will do when I a get a chance. Thanks cecilt. However, I don't want to do that every time I drive the car... was hoping that there was a better way. C8Smurf is right, when the top is down the visibility is really poor. I find myself sitting at light wanting to know more about what is going on behind me.

Not for me so far. I see double everything. Been advised to turn it toward me and not keep it in the standard out the back rear view mirror configuration. Gonna try it next time.

Yes, when using the rear view mirror camera you have to point it right at you, as if you are looking at a mirror as you are essentially just watching a TV. Here is what I have done. With the mirror camera turned off, move the rear view mirror to a position in which you can see yourself in it - pointing right at you. Then turn it to camera mode. You will notice a significant improvement. Hope this helps.
Don't understand your question. If you want the rear view of your 8" display to show the same display as if backing up but without the guide lines follow what i posted. Your display will constantly show the image on your 8" display of what is behind you.

I tried this. It worked for me too. 2021 model.

The problem with using the backup camera while driving is that it is very wide angle. The sense of depth is very wrong. Everything looks much further away than it really is, making it pretty worthless to try to judge what's going on behind you.

You got that right! I dont consider it worthless, but I do agree totally that the sense of depth is all screwed up. I even tried both of the fields - neither one is right. I ride with the top down all the time, and I don't know yet whether or not I will use this "feature" regularly or not.
On most RVs and travel trailers, there is no rear view mirror. At best, one has a Pathetic 380, some 720 dpi camera. It's a 1 or 2 out of 10, but it's better than nothing. The mirror (camera mode) in the C8 is a 10/10 in relation. The mirror itself is a 0.05 /10.
..... Given the texting pandemic I like to pay a lot of attention to what is going on behind me so that I do not get rear ended. ...
Not just the pandemic but the foolish folks using their cell phone when driving has been a big concern of mine for many years. To maintain my driving record of never having an accident with another car in 63 years takes a continual great view of the rear!! Have always had a good view of the rear even before the ~1990 SAE Tech paper on defensive driving said it's critical to not just see the folks on your rear fenders but those that will soon be there. Need a wide view of the rear to do that as shown in this graphic made from their many page paper.
Never needed a "blind spot mirror" to look further back in my '88, 93, or C6 Vette Coupes. But the C7 coupe had a poor view of the rear. I found the standard C8 center mirror looking thru the rear was as bad. BUT the C8 TV Mirror set for a wide view, like the convex passenger door mirror, is the best thing since sliced bread. In a Vert with the top up, what you should be using.
As someone said, I had a blurred view when I first tried. Thought it was my progressive glasses. Then I adjusted the 'real' mirror like I was looking at myself! View was great and also stopped glare from the hatch! Been driving that way for 20 months and the best view of the rear I have even had in an DD! Yea I know for a Vert when you put the top down have to adjust the mirror. Do that when I drive the wife's BMW- NO BIG DEAL!
I attribute my not having an accident in 63 years driving partly to it becoming 2nd nature to know where all cars are around me at all times! Think I started when driving at 17 being sure a car coming up fast from behind (no radar in 1959) wasn't a cop! Been doing it as a conditioned automatic response ever since. Yep I do drive aggressively- BUT Safely! Have my iPhone set not to get calls or hear text beeps. Put all my effort now trying to watch out for folks who are distracted!
