Paint protection film install gone wrong

Paint protection film install gone wrong
I picked up my brand new c8 two weeks ago and drove it straight to the protection film installer near me to get the hood, bumper, and rockers protected. When I waxed my car on the lift today I noticed several deep razor blade scratches where the plastic was trimmed. You only see these when the car is lifted but it’s all I think about now. Should I have the place pay for a re-paint of the rockers or try to live with it and maybe try touch up paint? Will a re-paint be as good as the factory? Thanks for the help.

These films and the associated installs are more trouble than they're worth... Been there, done that, never again!

^ I agree.
I drive trying my best to avoid rock chips etc, however when/if I get them I can get expert repair done for much less than what PPF install costs.

I'm not thrilled on the idea of having any sharp razors cutting anywhere near my paint. I've considered PPF, but decided to forego it. It's a lot less expensive just using touchup paint, if I ever get rock chips. I also make it a habit of keeping at least 2 car lengths space in front whenever I'm driving the C8 to try to avoid rock chips.

Get a competent installer and you won't have the issue. I have used PPF on 4 Corvettes (one twice when I did a wide body) a BMW, a Cadillac, a Lexus, an Infiniti and 3 MB - never had an issue.

^ I agree. I have had PPF installed on multiple cars and never had a botched job performed.

Well to answer your question. I would say yes, go back to the installer and have them pay to fix it. You paid for them to protect your paint, they did the exact opposite.

CF responds with self-justifying diatribes against installing PPF in first place. What a forum…
@kurumatt answers the question, I think correctly. It shouldn’t have taken nine posts to get there.

They should make that right.
I LOVE having PPF.
Was parked next to a fellow C8 owner who does not have it, they are "touching up" any rock chips etc along the way....they look like TOTAL CRAPOLA! I dont care HOW careful you are you can see the touched up areas.
After 6500 miles with 4000 of that at highway speeds, my PPF'd areas look new.
WELL worth it.

Wow, that is shoddy work at its best, I would be back and see if the owner will fix this as you paid for protection not damage to your Vette. I got one chip in 500 miles, got it fixed but I know where it is and I can see it. The business that did my PPF had done over 60 C8s prior to mine and I got to see a few of them including one just finished. Very happy with my choice of installer and getting PPF.

OUCH! Frankly, I'd be headed back to the installer and DEMAND that it be removed and replaced and contact my credit card company to dispute the charges. You own a car that's price can put a nice downpayment on a HOUSE! My installer, here in Atlanta, is also a sponsor of my Corvette club. I had AP3 put the Xpel paint protection on the entire front clip, mirrors, A & cross pillars and the lower rocker panels. Then the car was ceramic coated with Fusion. Yeah, $3300.00 but it was done right...the first time using laser cut film. Considering that AP3 is the exclusive paint protection dealer for the consortium that owns the McClaren, Maserati, Ferrari, Rolls, Bentley & Lamborghini dealers, my Vette was the "cheap car" in the install bays! Mercedes-Benz and Tesla use this company too. There are detail companies that KNOW how to properly install paint protection film and there are ones who saw a YouTube video. Take it back and demand it be fixed.

Wow wow wow!!!! That sucks big time. I would get reimburse for the full amount for the job. But now you run into a risk of pulling the PPF off and paint peeling off and causing more damage and then trying to match paint. I would probably leave it alone. Damn good luck, that really blows!!!!

I love my PPF. I was wiping down the front of my C8 before a car show this past weekend thinking I was only going to find bugs. Wrong! I found a spot on the PPF where a rock got into it. It's not into the paint - I can see that much - so I'll let Xpel's self healing qualities do their work and if that doesn't work I'll have it replaced - and it won't look like touch up paint which sticks out to me like a sore thumb.
@Kmm846 - that looks terrible. Very shoddy work. I would take it back to that shop and have a nice discussion with the owner.

That is a really bad job.
I've always done film on our nice cars in the past, but I had a bad experience even with a great XPEL installation on a white Jaguar F-Type. There will always be some seams on places like the nose, rockers, mirrors, etc., and every seam collects dirt over time. No matter what I tried to do you can't get those seams completely clean.
It's not very noticeable on darker colors, but sticks out like a sore thumb on a white car, and I am not installing PPF on our Arctic White C8. As a non-metallic and white, it is probably the easiest color to touch up the occasional rock chip. The touched-up area looks a lot better than those dirty black seams.

Been doing for 15 years never had a problem with the quality or the install. You have to use a good shop. My shop does Rolls Royce, Lambos and Ferrari no problems there. Who needs paint chips from the highway.
