Is it theft? Dealer tries stealing car back from owner's driveway
My buddy had his car in for service at Chevy. They told him it would be locked away inside as they had to keep it overnight. He specifically stated not to leave the car outside. His wife and him were out to dinner and drove by the dealer at 830pm - all locked up and closed. Car was outside. He pulled into the lot and took the car home.
Fast forward to next morning, no call from dealer. 2 dealer workers/techs show up to the house with keys and try taking the car back to the dealership. He was livid that they would show up and not even call him or anything, then have the audacity to try and remove the vehicle from the owners driveway.
I told him he should call the GM/owner of the dealership and let Chevy corporate know this. If they were on my property doing this... I will leave it at that.

That’s Chevy service for you. Buy a nearly 100k car and get treated like you have a 10k car. When I took my new car in, they didn’t even put a damn paper lining for the floor mats. They tracked dirt all over it. My damn Honda Accord gets treated better at the Honda dealer than this.
Seriously crap service.

They are both wrong to be honest. One the dealership shouldn't have left it out on the lot per owners request. However the owner entrusted the vehicle to the dealership. He didn't notify the dealer that it was going to be taken back. For all they know that car got stolen and they trying to retrieve it.
It's like renting out an exotic car and the rental company doesnt want you to floor it but catches you flooring so they decide to come and take the car from you without notice. That's not how it works.

Theft? The dealer had the car in for service, and it was removed from their property without permission? If I was the dealer, my first reaction would be to think the car had been stolen. But …. they knew the car was now at their customer's home, and they still had a set of keys. There had to be some communication between the car's owner and the dealer or this would have been reported as stolen by the dealer. This story, as presented, doesn’t make sense to me.

Sounds like techs knew car was outside and going for a ride and wanted to take it back to dealer for ride or they wanted the car ????

Sorry, didn't elaborate. It was parked in the garage overnight and then he took it out in the morning to get coffee/breakfast and left it out in his driveway for probably an hour before they showed up.

GM dealer service is trash! I don't care about my car being outside but could you put the top up when it rains? And try not to let the tools rust on the seats! Yes that happened at a chevy dealer!

As far as the owner of the C8 taking the car home I think that was a dumb move. He should have waited to the next day and confronted the dealership for leaving his car outside if it bothered him so much.

Who takes their car back from the dealer after giving it to them for service? They're liable for it while its entrusted to them, why would he bother with it?
Dealer shouldn't have grabbed it back from his driveway the next day once they realized the address it was at was the vehicle owner's home but the first unreasonable action was taking the car back from the dealer. Depending on state law, entering the dealership facility to take your car back afterhours could be considered trespass.

Not sure we’re getting ALL pertinent info since this is all second hand info. BUT if the dealer actually believed the owner’s car had been stolen, the dealer would call law enforcement since a STOLEN car recovery could end up very badly quickly. In some states the owner has the right to protect his property with deadly force. As has been mentioned by others, this really makes no rational sense if the dealer knew where (owner’s home) the car was parked.

I would argue that may well be the case in your experience but not in mine. Over 48 years of Corvette ownership and 8 Corvettes, I have never had a bad experience. I am likely in the minority, but bad experiences are not universal.

Maybe for you but not for me. My dealership is first class and treats me like my C8 is a Ferrari but without the ridiculous expense. The problem with most guys who complain about their dealers are the same guys who would drive two counties away to save a hundred bucks. Maybe if more guys shopped their dealerships instead of just shopping price they wouldn't have so many dealer issues.

Once a dealer tech locked my keys in the Corvette while in the dealership parking lot. What made it worse: the top was down and it started to rain.

And where was the dealership supposed to park it overnight? I am sure they had a few million dollars worth of cars parked outside to keep it company.

C8 Corvette. Have you looked at prices these days
for automobiles and trucks? A nice truck can be MSRP
over a 100 grand. So, the Corvette is inside and the truck that
costs more is outside.

I've heard some corvette dealers service their cars at the Cadillac dealership. Anyone done that?
