someone know how to set up nav without onstar- would appreciate any input - thanks

I don't understand your question. Assuming you have a 2LT/3LT or 1LT with the PDR/NAV you don't need OnStar to us the built-in navigation. The instructions are in the infotainment manual. Press the Nav icon and follow any insturctions it gives you.
Or you can use Android Auto/CarPlay for navigation.
