WiFi hotspot vs Android auto
I have been having problems with my ATT WiFi hotspot since I got my '23 HTC Z51. Well, after about 20 or so conversations with OnStar techs with no resolution I decided to try some common sense fixes. Seems like as long as AA is connected, the WiFi will not connect. So. I went to system settings - apps- stopped AA from connecting and WiFi works perfectly.
Thanks On Star!
Thanks On Star!
Problem is not ATT. ONStar techs are ill informed. Setting in "Systems' will not allow Android auto to work in tandem with hot spot. This is new Corvette that A A connects wirelessly. Evidently OnStar knows very little about their own systems. I figured that out, not them!

Why do you have both On Star and a ATT paid cellular hot spot? Not sure I understand what hot spot Wi Fi sharing accomplishes in a car's interior space the size of a bread box. How many on board devices can you use driving? Android Auto is Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth connects two paired devices to each other. Nothing more nothing less. In most cases, your phone to the car. Android Auto projects your phone onto your Info screen making it an extension of the phone's utility. Nothing more than that.
You should have registered each device you want to share with the hot spot. Security code and password at a minimum.
I'd dump On Star and the hot spot. The paid data plan with your cell phone is all the Internet access you'll ever need. Or want. Simple is better.

Don't know if this is a related issue, but it's food for thought...
If I tether my tablet to my phone, my phone cannot connect to WiFi.
The issue of the car may be similar to the phone in that it can have only an incoming OR outgoing connection, but not both.

I use a device in the car to project onto the infotainment screen that needs a wi-fi connection for real-time data but I use my phone's hotspot for that.

What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth technology allows devices to communicate with each other without cables or wires. Bluetooth relies on short-range radio frequency, and any device that incorporates the technology can communicate as long as it is within the required range.
Bluetooth—named for a 10th-century Danish king, incidentally—uses radio waves to transmit information between two devices directly. The radio waves used by Bluetooth are much weaker than those involved with Wi-Fi or cellular signals, two other common ways to connect devices.

"
How Android Auto Wireless Works
Most connections between phones and car radios use Bluetooth. It's how most hands-free calling implementations work, and you can also stream music over Bluetooth. However, Bluetooth connections don't have the bandwidth required by Android Auto Wireless. To achieve a wireless connection between your phone and your car, Android Auto Wireless taps into the Wi-Fi functionality of your phone and your car radio. It only works with vehicles that have Wi-Fi functionality."
I do find it interesting the technical details are missing from https://www.android.com/auto
