I used google… “Chevy fits the Z51 with a shorter (numerically higher) final-drive ratio to improve acceleration. Base C8s get a 4.89:1 final-drive ratio, whereas Z51s are fitted with a 5.17.”
Not sure why they would bother with this small of a difference unless they were trying to optimize certain time to speed/distance times. Maybe they wanted another marketing line item for the Z51 package.
Be certain that we will not "feel" a miniscule 5% difference in gearing(not HP). Anyone who tells you that they can tell the difference of full of crap. There are still many guys who paid 5 grand more for this academic difference and believe that they have a faster car.

5% increase in torque multiplication is substantial, but given the gearing, traction and electronic nannies I doubt we Z51ers can feel it.
As you can see in the above chart, the transmission gears and ring and pinion gears (not listed 3.55) are the same. However, on the Z51 the transfer gear is 1.46 vs 1.38 (non Z51) giving the Z51 higher numerical overall torque multiplication and final drive ratio (5.18 vs 4.89). The higher numerical Z51 transfer gears allow an advantage coming out of turns along with the E-differential. This might seem minimal, but with several laps on a track this improves overall time. Straight line performance is about .1 of a second faster for the Z51 which is a driver's race. I'm not going to make this a Z51 vs non Z51 discussion, just giving the facts. You decide what works best for you.
Your build sheet with the RPO codes will state Z51: Z51 performance package.

The final drive ratio isn't the only difference between a Z51 and non-Z51 car.

Apparently they did this to get under the magical 3.0 0-60 time.
