One point, I have seen folks refer to Android Auto and CarPlay as "apps". It may be semantics, but on the iPhone it does not get handled like an app (such as Waze or Pandora). There is no icon, and no controls are listed the way they are for apps. Instead, it shows under General, as if it is a feature of the operating system. Its not (as far as I know) downloaded from the app store and cant be deleted like an app either - though it can be enabled.
On the car, it appears on the infotainment screen as a button to initiate it. But when I view "my apps" or "available apps" it does not show up like an app (such as Spotifiy). So, I am not really clear on why its called an app - although it is clearly a software process that exists on the phone and has a counterpart in the car that can be initiated.
As long as I am rambling - I have also seen folks refer to these processes as simply reflecting what is on the screen of the phone. I think they are far more complex than that. For one, it does not match the screen - when using it - my phone shows the turn list, while the screen shows the map. The controls are placed differently and seem to work a little different. And of course it must pass control info in both directions. To me it seems as if there is some additional processing in the car between the phone and display.
Android Auto is a seperate app that you download and install (and update separately from the OS) and you can open the app up on your phone to do configuration, but you have more configuration options when it is connected to the car.
Yes, there is more going on than just mirroring the screen.
