Valentine 1 Gen, 2 and Waze. I've had V1's since they were introduced years ago, there are fancier RD's but not necessarily better. You have to "get to know" whatever brand you have. I know the V1 and am very comfortable with it and yes, it has saved me many times.

Valentine One for years and years. YES, they pay for themselves not only in tickets but insurance rate increases. In California and other states LEO often run with their radar on so the detector serves as a LEO detector. Having arrows and strength indicator I can “see” more than 1 LEO cars - those I’m approaching and those that are behind me.
As for those who say that if you’re painted with laser, you’re already ticketed that’s not necessarily true. The car in front of you or another car can be painted and you’ll know that as well.
V1. I have both V1G1 and V1G2 in different cars. (I'm too lazy to swop detectors between cars) If you have an Android phone the Valentine paired with the JBV1 app gives unmatched information and control. This pairing comes with a learning curve, but once over that you'll know miles before you find the source of the radar.
I was driving across the Nevada hinterlands where some of the straight sections are over 10 miles long. I started getting beeping and slowed it to just under 75 mph. I drove for a couple of miles and saw what looked like a likely spot for them to hide. .. Went on past that and drove a couple more miles before coming up and a string of approaching cars. The stater was the 2nd one back, running with his radar on. I must have been well over 5 miles, more likely over 6 when I first started getting alerts.
JBV1 uses Waze as its source for Crowd Source Alerts. Driving across the Mid West earlier this year I would be informed of police ahead, at minimum a mile away, whether they had their radar on or not.
It's also nice to have the aircraft in the area alerts, showing the owner of the plane, and it's distance, altitude and airspeed, tho all that data is hard to absorb at a glance. Luckily the owner and flight pattern are announced, as are speed limit decreases as you approach.
I could go on and on, but by now you should be getting the idea.
Where I live and drive the combo of Waze and the uniden R8 have been life savers. Up and down the 95 corridor the VA and NC police "leak" signal like crazy and will alert long before sight, most likely from other cars but definitely way in advance. You can almost see them moving when too many waze reports happen that area will be clean then the Uniden starts to chirp further down the road with no waze reports. Have also detected unmarks trying to sneak up into traffic from behind, the arrows help a ton and rear detection is pretty far reaching also.
In the country area near my home the police have no radar discipline, they spray and pray and just leave it running. On long range will start chirping way before I am a target, again could be other cars or just the distance and lack of effort from locals. I have it set up per the guy on Vortex radar youtube advises and i do see some Blind spot pick ups from Acuras and Hondas on the highway.
Whether or not its saved me i can't calculate but it definitely gives good situational awareness. Had the R7 first and them bought an R8. I hit NOVA alot and have not have a pull over due just to the detector, although haven't been pulled over in years either so again cannot correlate. The R8 is supposed to be less leaky than others.
Escort Max 360 MKII with Blendmount. I found the Uniden R7, Valentine V2 and Escort Max 360 MKII about same in specs and ratings. I really didn't care for the display on the V2, a bit dated. I finally chose the Escort as I caught it on a couple day sale $100 off on Amazon. That helped make my choice as it was the bargain at that point. It works great, and I love the directional notification.
