What do you guys think is going on here? I have never noticed anything like this in 40 years of car ownership.
Car is a 2023 with 6900 miles on it. Right front
Honestly from my years of detailing in my teens and college that looks like caked on brake dust. That part of the wheel might of got some contaminant on it that made the dusk stick more? Your tire also has some of that color on it.
Try a dedicated wheel cleaner and really get into that section. I have even used some brake cleaner then quickly clean off with soapy water. A stiff wheel brush may help as well.
The other thing I will say is IF the wheel was damaged in any way even small scratches from a tire mounting the rough surface will be much harder to get the brake dust out of. It will cake into the crevasses.
my brakes produce very little dust, almost none at all

it looks as if something oozed from within the rim and if that spot was rotated towards the bottom facing the ground then gravity would have pulled it onto the tire. What do you think about that theory ?
p.s. This is the original wheel, never dismounted or mounted, has had zero damage
Hello there. Our team would recommend paying your local dealer a quick visit to ask what they think the substance may be and best ways to clean it off. Should you need help locating a facility near you, please email us at socialmedia@gm.com with your Username/Forum Title in the subject line.

That could be the case, they were mounted originally so there is still a chance.
How new? They do use lubricant during install and could have pooled if the wheel sat for a duration but never seen it leak additional, just residual directly after install. How many miles on the car/tires?

This would be a good first step. Hopefully whatever it is would be removed.

But, it has sat in the garage for a week at a time here and there. I hand wash it (that's how I noticed, 1st hand wash of 2025) so I would have noticed this last fall which was the last hand wash. So, it's weird. I woudl have expected whatever lubricant they use at the factory to mount the tire onto the rim to have leaked sooner.
