Default Free C8 Transmission Filter Change

I have a 2023 Corvette and went to the dealer for state inspection and to get my free transmission filter change within the 2-yr mark. They told me GM changed the policy, and the free change has to be done between 7-8k miles. Is this true. I thought that only applied to 2024 model year.

The first filter change is 7,500 miles with tolerance in either end. After that, it's at 22,500 and ever 22,500 miles thereafter.

Go on the Chevy owner site and it will show the "warranties" in effect for your vehicle. The "Free First Service" is considered a warranty since it is an obligation of GM. You can check out the fine-print for additional details & limitations.

You are right that ONLY applied to 2024 now 2025. They also did NOT give the extra year for prior years (now 3 and can separate the Engine Oil Free from DCT.) For 2023 it does not say they could not change early for free and get reimbursed (as i did for my 2020 on GM's dime.) Just does NOT count to reducing the need or adding miles to change again at 7500 miles.

That GM letter has been posted. Search and find. I never got it for my 2024 E-Ray.

You are correct. Many dealers just don't know what the rules are for this. As mentioned go into your my chevy ap and see what it says for your specific car.

This is the maintenance requirement not the rules for the warrantee free service. Different rules.

Free Service:
2023 and earlier: Two years and unlimited mileage to claim the free service which consists of engine oil/filter change and DCT external canister filter replacement. The is no mileage constraint on when this can be claimed.

2024 (and we assume carries over to 2025): Two years to claim the free engine oil/filter change an no mileage limit. Three years to claim the free DCT external canister filter replacement - but you must have 7000 miles or more to claim it. There is NO stated upper mileage limit for claiming the free DCT external canister filter change. The splitting of the free services, and the minimum mileage requirement were announced in a bulletin that applies only to model year 2024. It is NOT retroactive to prior model years, so the that minimum mileage does NOT apply to 2023 and prior.

Maintenance Requirement (applies to all model years):
Engine Oil/Filter: Change the oil when the Oil Life System says so, but always at least once a year. The Oil Life System includes time so you can go by that.

DCT External Canister Filter: Change the DCT external canister filter when the filter life monitor says so (if you have that), between 7000-8000 miles even if done earlier, then at 22,500 miles, then every 22,500 miles after, or every 24 hours of track use, whichever is first.

DCT fluid: Change the DCT fluid when the fluid life monitor says so, every 45000 miles, at least every three years, or 24 hours of track use, whichever is first. The fluid life monitor does not include the time requirement - so the owner must be aware of and observed that requirement.

I am still confused!?....and if I am, I can assure you the local Chevy dealer will be....

However...

From the below mentioned bulletin....
"Q: The customer wants the filter replaced early, can I use this warranty coverage to pay for the replacement?
A: No, the odometer must have at least 7,000 miles to use the factory covered maintenance. If the customer wants the filter replaced prior to the GM recommended schedule of 7,500 (+/- 500 miles), it is at their expense."

Doesn't this contradict the 'two years any mileage statement'?

Specifically, I have an almost 2 year old C8...with 3500 miles. According to the above 2023 and earlier statement, I need to have the DCT service before 2 years and do not have to have 7,000 miles.

So which is it?

1. '2 years and unlimited miles and it is free'....OR?
2. 'No, the odometer must have at least 7,000 miles to use the factory covered maintenance. If the customer wants the filter replaced prior to the GM recommended schedule of 7,500 (+/- 500 miles), it is at their expense.'

Please respond to model 2023 year only! What is covered and when can the free DCT service be performed

Much appreciated!

Thanks!

What I cant wrap my head around is the guidelines are written out with every I dotted and t crossed and all these educated experts “don’t get it”.
Maybe they get it but don’t like the answer?

I thought my original post was clear about what applied to 2024 model, what applied to 2023 and earlier models, and what applies to all models. And I thought I clearly stated that the bulletin only applies to the 2024 models and was not retroactive to earlier models. I have included my original statement, but highlighted in green the part that only applies to 2023 and earlier, and in red the part that only applies to 2024 models. The bulletin states the indicated model year is 2024, and that the text says "The factory-covered maintenance replacement of the external canister transmission filter for the Chevrolet Corvette has its own warranty coverage, separate from the standard Chevrolet First Maintenance Visit, starting with the 2024 model year. This warranty coverage is good for three years after new vehicle purchase," so this time I have attached the bulletin and marked the relevant statements.

I really can't explain why the dealer is confused - careless interpretation comes to mind but I don't know. Bulletins always indicate the applicable model year - dealers typically know that. But bulletin 24-NA-081, which only lists 2024 models, also splits the free service into separate engine oil/filter change and DCT filter change, with different expiration terms. You can see in the bulletin that GM has now provide a separate labor operation for the filter change. That's new (or, was new in April 2024 when the bulletin was issues). For 2023 and earlier models, there is a single labor operation for the combined engine oil/filter and DCT filter change, and it cannot be split, and that has not changed. What evidence does the dealer have that any of this applies to earlier model years? Is there another bulletin that extends this change to prior model years?

You can look into your Chevrolet account on line and you will find the terms of your free service in the warranty section, where you can see if it changed or not. I have attached what my free service looks like (I have used mine) for my 2021. You should have a similar statement in your account that will show you the applicable free service expiration. And, I can tell you that if the terms were changed it would have been reflected in your account. I say this because when I bought my 2021, the free service expiration was actually 1 year. That was later changed to 2 years in 2021 and that change WAS retroactive. And that change from 1 year expiration to two years expiration was reflected in my account.

Thats good, but that information is about the maintenance requirement. OP appears to be asking about the terms of the free service.
And, while you app is showing you the nominal mileage for the required DCT filter change, you can (and must to comply with the maintenance requirements) change it at any mileage between 7000-8000 miles.

If you have a 2023 or earlier, your free coverage is 2 years, with no mileage limit on when you can claim the free service. The 7500 miles +/- 500 miles is the maintenance schedule requirement, and must be observed, regardless of whether its free or not.

If you have a 2024, your coverage for the DCT filter replacement expires in three years. You must have at least 7000 miles to claim it, but there is no upper mileage limit. You could claim it at 10000 miles as long as it was within three years. Of course, the maintenance schedule requires its changed between 7000 and 8000 miles, regardless of who pays, so best to claim it in that window. The bulletin for this applies to model year 2024.

If there is a bulletin that changes the terms of the free service on 2023 and prior model years, I have not seen it. Many of us have claimed the free combined engine oil change and DCT filter change, including me, well before 7000 miles.

@Andybump,

Your initial post was clear to me and I truly appreciate the link to the nhsta which I printed for reference as I have a 2024. Thank you for doing that!

Visited a local Chevrolet dealer today to ask about the Transmission filter change. 2024 Stingray with 6,525 miles. I'm tracking the car in 10 days so I will rack up another 500 miles this weekend to put me over 7,000 miles.

The dealer insists the service is not free but will cost me $580.00 and should take two hours. I politely suggested he look into this further as I am under the impression the service is free. He typed my VIN into his computer, then told me again that the service is not free but will be $580.00. Wish I had brought the NHTSA bulletin with me.

So, the dealer is saying that even when you have 7000 miles its not covered? Did he say why?
