OT - Drano in Plastic Bottles
Received this email and thought to pass it around since quite a few of the forum members are wide-spread and have cottages. Hoping this is NOT happening, but be careful, just in case.....

Something to seriously consider, especially now, while we're out there cleaning up our yards!!!! Incidents have occurred in Teeswater and South Grey/Bruce - FRIGHTENING!
Kids and others are putting Drano, tin foil and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!!
If the bottle is picked up and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.
Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.
Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it and BOOM!!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.
Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed."

Vicky - Be dubious of these sorts of warnings.

Yes, usually I am leary of these emails.
Bu.. bu...but it came with a fireman's warning!
According to your link, it does work and causes damage.

Right you are Vicky - Mea culpa. I just googled bottle bomb and HOAX came up next. The fact that it is even plausible gives cause for concern. It's new to me, but according to the articles not 'zackly a new phenomon. Let's hope it doesn't become a fad here.

The reaction occurs immediately so they will blow up some time shortly after being made. I've seen no evidence of them being built to have the reaction delayed until someone moves them, although I suppose it's possible if you rig it so the foil stay out of the drano until it's moved around. I do understand some have not popped though and they would be dangerous to pick up.
It'd be interesting to know if the letter is really from the fire chief being given credit for it.

The local schools were put on alert for this as there is a youtube video that is causing concern. Usually these alerts come from the police or fire depts. before the schools put out any announcements.

Hi....I'll bet you my weeks pay against yours that it came from the fire chief......!
It was circulated LAST YEAR in the Toronto area, from the Fire and Police deparments.......It was kept quiet so every damned 13 year old wasn't trying to build it.......

Vicky - It's not a waste of time. I wasn't questioning if it was a real possibility, just the source.
The description in the email is a little off. The ingredients react immediately when combined and it should pop shortly after being built. It might be possible to put it together is such a way that the ingredients don't combine until the bottle is moved, but kids will build them to see them explode, not to try and harm someone.
The most likely danger would be from approaching one that reacted and built pressure inside the bottle but did not pop.

LOL, common sense... Since when is it common sense to whack some bottle you see laying around in your yard, driveway, sidewalk, ditch or whatever? When I see bottles, cans or whatever lying around, I pick it up right away and bring it to the recycling box.

it has been suggested that if you just pick it up it may explode , leaving a gash in yer hand & possibly loss of a finger , thumb or an eye
but if some humans do not understand that logic , go ahead ...pick it up lol
do ya feel lucky ?

Hi....Eyemaster/SPOCC and all.....
Let me put this to rest......If you see a clear plastic bottle on your lawn, before you pick it up, check to see if it has anything in it. If it has what appears to be a liquid and some sort of silver aluminum product in it.....
Don't pick it up,poke it or try to move it with a stick (hockey or broom stick is not long enough) .....Call the 911 and tell them you have a suspicious bottle.......
It is a VIOLENT explosion....
HTH......
