Restoration... 16 years and counting... 1970 Convertible
Hi,
I have posted this in the C3-General section already, so some of you may have already seen my post, but I figured I'd post it here as well, so my fellow Canadians can take a look
Well I'm sure some of you know how it goes... I bought my 1970 convertible in 2001, and it has been going through a frame off restoration ever since... yep, 16 years ago... obviously this was done on and off, and mainly off for several years.
And anyone who has gone through a frame off restoration also knows how much it costs (the main reason for the off periods LOL)...
Still no regrets though... I'm hoping to have one last final push this year and get it done.
If you want to check out a BUNCH more pictures you can check my site at www.9teen70vette.com
Enjoy
P.S. Have I waited patiently 16 years without driving a Vette... heck no... I caved in and bought a 2007 Indy 500 Pace Car back in 2011... Have driven it 50000 miles in those 6 years that I have had it, so no garage queen for me.
When I bought it...
Frame/drivetrain done!
Interior preparation
Engine bay (Base 350/300HP)
Almost there!

Well, haven't updated this thread in a long time... and I basically I need to change the subject from "16 years and counting" to "19 years and counting"... but the light is now at the end of the tunnel... not quite out of the tunnel but at the very very end. Assembly is 100% done. Now it's just a few mechanical things to tighten up, and it should be ready to go. Little leaks here and there, which are being addressed. Then needs to get an alignment, and the A/C filled... then a week or 2 shakedown with a few several hour drives to make sure that it's all good.
My next problem is going to be to pick it up. I'm in the province of QC, and the car is in NB. With covid, it may not be as straightforward and things could change in the next few weeks.
The end result is phenomenal... better than new. I will rest easy once it's in my garage which I hope will be sometime in the next 2 weeks.
Enjoy the results!!!

Hi Paul... thanks, I love it too... did you mean I "won't" have fans for what I'm doing? I'm sure the purists will be after my skin... but I am of the mindset that I want the car the way that I want it, and not how someone else wants it... I'll be ready for the criticism!

This is the first that I've seen your posts and I'm glad you posted in the Canadian section as I would have missed it.
Congrats on making it through the journey and hope you see a light at the end of the tunnel. Some of us on the Canadian section have done our own body off resto and know first hand what you're going through. It takes a lot of determination, many hundreds of hours and a whole whack of cash.
Please keep us posted and hope to see you, by end of the summer with the beauty on the road.

If all goes well, hopefully by the end of the summer it will be on the road... and it won't be a garage queen either, I plan on driving it.

That is one gorgeous car and congrats!!! |Love the fact you built it for you and not the typical purists that you can only restore a car one way. Bloody hell that is one gorgeous ride. you have some serious patience... I wish I had some of yours! Cheers and enjoy

After 16 years of on and off restoration, yeah I guess I am patient. Hopefully by the end of this year it will be complete, then I'll enjoy it, and it won't be a garage queen either. I'll drive it!

Thanks gdh... I chose a color called Copperhead Metallic. Stacey David built a truck with this color, and I liked it, so that's the color I'm going with... you can see it on the picture of the engine bay. Color on the firewall and on the sides it Copperhead Metallic.

I remember well his Copperhead build, had thought about using that PPG paint scheme on mine. Did you also go with the larger gold flake like he did as well? Looking fwd to seeing it completed, I think that the NCRS folks are becoming fewer each passing year. I tend to like the Not Correctly Restored Society version better.

I'm sure when it's done, I'll be going to ON for car shows there as well.

I wish that I could remember the episode where he and Ron mixed the paint. I'm pretty sure it was part of a non Copperhead specific episode where he'd said that there were lots of requests for the paint code and he went to the paint shop mixed the paint and then picked up 2 jars of gold fleck. He had said that most painters used the smaller flecks but he chose the larger one to help make the paint really pop. I had talked to a couple of painters recommended to me that did a lot of Corvettes. Neither one used PPG 3 stage paint nor wanted to.
