Default Mobil 1 0W40 ESP in Canada

After reading a bunch of the threads about the difficulty obtaining the new Mobil 1 0W40 ESP spec, I thought it would be even harder to get in Canada. On Wednesday, I went into Georgian Chev in Barrie and asked about it. They weren't aware of the new oil, but immediately took a few minutes to look into it and realized it was the factory fill on the 2019s. They said they would order a few cases in and let me know when it arrived....got a call today saying it was there. I asked them to double check that it was indeed the ESP - they checked the bottle and verified for me it was.

Long story short - Georgian Chev has Mobil 1 0W40 ESP in stock if anyone needs it. No idea if other dealers will have as easy a time accessing it, but I hope so. I'll take a quick minute to vouch for Dave in parts at Georgian, he's been very helpful and has provided competitive pricing. If you call, ask for him and tell him Andy sent ya!

I use Mobil1 0W40 European in all my cars because of the bit higher zinc content. That price is crazy stupid. I would be embarrassed to even admit to buying the stuff let alone actually do it.

I do find this price prohibitive to. My guess is that it will be more affordable when it will be available in the aftermaket. For now I will stick with my Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. Best oil from Pennzoil and it exceed all requirements of the car, I will sleep tight.

I looked at that Euro spec 0W40 when I bought oil recently, but wasn't sure what the consensus is on it?? I ended up buying the standard 5W30 M1 instead (it was on sale).

Until the 0w40 ESP becomes readily available and priced reasonably, I'm going to use Mobil 1 5w30 ESP instead. It actually looks better on paper than the 0w40, and is not quite as pricey at $16 per liter but if you buy it at CT or Partsource when they have a special sale (like the no tax event at Partsource last weekend), the price is a bit more reasonable.

can t understand why everyone is going gooo gooo over 0W40. 5w30 as been the fill of choice for 30 odd years and continues to be up untill 2019 model year. the C7 Lti and Lt4 have not changed since the introduction, maybe the 19 model yr changed but i doubt it. Akin to the neighbor having a a different shrub on the the street, everyone has to have one.

Well said. Any C7 will run just fine on Mobil 1 5W30. Nothing has changed on either the LT1 or LT4 that would require a different oil.

Just because it has worked for the past 30 years doesn't mean that it's going to continue to be the best choice for the future. Things change and with further testing, car makers often find ways to improve their products and choice of motor oil is often one of those changes they will make. I would be willing to bet that GM has done it's homework here, and has found in it's testing that a slightly thicker oil is more beneficial for these engines. One big difference with the LT1 and LT4 compared to previous Corvette engines is that they now use direct injection, and that can cause more fuel to get into the oil, thus thinning it out over the course of your intervals. I already saw that with my very first oil analysis on my C7, with only 1789 km on the oil it had already thinned out to a 5w20 because of fuel dilution. GM also likes the idea of being able to just specify one oil for both street and track, so that's another bonus with this 0w40, serious track rats no longer need to keep swapping back and forth between 15w50 and 5w30 anymore.

That being said, it's not as if your engine will only last 100,000 km if you run Mobil 1 5w30. But if you like to drive aggressively from time to time and/or you plan on keeping your C7 for a very long time, you're better off with a slightly thicker oil.

You are right about this. In fact, it all started with the announcement of the new oil, 0w40 esp, saving the task of changing oil grade (15w50 I think) every time you go to the track and changing it again to 5w30 because the track session in over and the car goes back to the street. But for the peoples, like most of us, who doesn't track the car, I am not sure about any gain with 0w40 ESP at 23$/quart. If the 5w30 you are using now meet or exceed the specification your engine need, you are ok.
