Default Road Trip to Tail of Dragon Area?

There are many amazing routes to the Tail of the Dragon area. I would be pleased to help organize a 4 or 5 day trip if there is interest.

Default Trip Date by Consensus

1. Good weather.
2. Maximum number of people can go.

Default Great Response!

My wife and I have been on many Corvette road trips. Our 2010 has 104,000 k - all pleasure. We have been on 8 Laps of Pa with the Pittsburgh Club (4 day trips) and 5 Gatherings at Tybee Island Georgia. We have found the most important thing is not to drive too far each day. Enjoy the great drives and things to see. I have roughed out a possible itinerary:

Day 1. Bedford Pa - beautiful historic town with covered bridges, gravity hill, fort & colonial village - about 7 hour drive. We have stayed there at a Fairfield - good restaurants and a 1790 Pub/restaurant.
Day2. Harpers Ferry - mountain town with each street about 12 feet lower than the next. This was where the American's made their weapons before the Civil War. John Brown tried to seize town to free the slaves in the south. A canal with locks was dug all the way into the mountains from Chesapeake Bay. Luray Caverns - some of the best with a great auto museum. Stay at Roanoke VA?
Day3. Blue Ridge Skyway and Asheville (was largest house in U.S.) - Stay somewhere near Asheville
Day4. Hellbender 28, Fontana Dam 50 stories and you drive over the top. Tail of Dragon both ways. Stay Fontana Village Resort or in Best Western in Franklin with river directly behind.
Day5. Either stay and enjoy more or return home depending on individual circumstances.

We are very flexible as long as there is not too much driving.

P.S. There is a town called Galax in the area that we have always wanted to visit. On Saturday nights they have a live mountain music radio show in a restored theater. The show is broadcast to several states. The cost is $5. They also have an antique car museum and indian artifact meuseum - cost $3 & $4.

Coincidentally, I will be a first-timer at the Tail of the Dragon from April 14th-17th.

Whatever happens, happens!!

Default When?

The most important thing is good weather. The mountains tend to be cooler. The best time is later May thru to mid September. The trouble with late May is the U.S. memorial day weekend. In order to get maximum attendance, I suspect July or August would be the choice.

Be sure to check other sites - Harleys, Miatas, Jags and so on as they will be scheduling their runs on The Dragon. Vettes may show up and you've got some other group of vehicles in front of you. In 2009 you had around 70 of the little two seater smart cars roaring? through there.
