No Front plate being considered - Not April Fools joke

Apparently the police forces in Ontario have come out against this.
All those folks who tossed the plate insert are going to be scrambling. Best pop rivet yours on if this passes.

I get why the police forces are against this and it makes complete sense. I know as car enthusiasts we hate it because it ruins the front end on our cars (or some feel that way, it doesn't bother me honestly) But in law enforcement if you're trying to catch a hit and run driver and you can have two chances of getting a plate number instead of one, that's a good thing. There really is no logical reason to get rid of the front plate, if you sit down and really think about it.

So in jurisdictions where there is no plate there a higher level of unsolved crime? Sorry, I’m not buying it. Just another use of the safety excuse to keep Ontario from moving past it’s Victorian social attitudes.

Heard this morning it won’t be announced this week - but later in the year. By the way, hope it happens but don’t think for a second one plate will be cheaper to the end user than two

-Reduced number of plates --> less raw materials required, less emissions from plate manufacturing, less waste when they require disposal
-Reduced direct costs to drivers and/or increased government profit from sale of plates (depending on if they reduce licensing costs or not)
-Reduced number of plate brackets (benefits as above)
-Improved fuel economy - Unfortunately this is moot on most Corvettes, but generally a flat square surface on the front of vehicles decreases aerodynamic efficiency. This will increase in importance with the shift to electric vehicles.
-Decreased emissions due to increased fuel efficiency
-Improved vehicle re-sale value --> for two reasons, 1) Vehicles are more resalable to other jurisdictions that don't require front plates and 2) Low speed collisions result in less damage...leading into,
-Reduced Insurance rates (approx $7,000,000 per year, when applying Saskatchewan data to Ontario)
The big reason to keep front plates?
-In the event that your suspect is slow moving, it's not night time, their vehicle is reasonably clean, visibility is good, they aren't from out of province, or riding a motorcycle, and have actually decided to mount a front plate in good condition, you might be able to pick up their front plate number. If this were a legitimate problem, then quebecers working in Ottawa would need to mount front plates, people with unreadable or snow covered plates would get tickets, places without front plates would have higher crime rates, etc.
You'd have to ask an officer to be sure, but my guess is they are far more concerned with the brand/colour of the vehicle, and the driver description than plate numbers when they are looking at oncoming traffic.

Surely, their opposition to the front plate removal can't be about something as crass as ticket revenue (eye roll). My understanding is that LIDAR is effective at greater distance with a front plate as a reflective source. They can still get you without front plate, but the distance is shortened, particularly if the headlights on your car don't provide a good reflective point as an alternative to the front plate.

They don't need bar codes. They already have cars with cameras that can capture the plate number of every car that goes past in the other direction. The can also drive up and down the streets in subdivisions and scan every parked car.
