Adams had a car wash set up at Carlisle and I was able to use one. Theirs is $100, chemical guys is like $40 and I have seen others for $20
Anyone use them?
Any thoughts or observations?

They are ok (assuming you mean the foam guns, not the cannon attachments for power washers). I'm a detailing professional, and I use them from time to time. Just depends on what needs to be done. Heavily soiled cars benefit from them sometimes, as the foam will lift and trap dirt, so when you rinse/wash the surface, it reduces scratches.
You don't have to have special soaps, but there are some designed for the guns/cannons that produce better foam. Highly recommend using a pH neutral soap.

I use a foam gun more often than not when I occasionally have to bucket-wash the cars (too dirty for detail sprays etc).
I use just about any car wash soap I have on the shelf, typically Meguiars, Liquid Glass car wash concentrate is my favorite, Sonax shampoo, CG Snow Foam, just about anything that will make suds (the one that comes to mind that doesn't make much suds is C-Magic IIRC.
My process:
1. Wet the car down.
2. Use the foam gun to cover the car in suds. Let dwell.
3. Fill up the buckets used in a 2-bucket wash and get out the mitts, brushes, etc.
4. Foam should have been sitting on car for about 5 minutes by now, so rinse it all off using a sheeting technique with the hose.
5. Proceed to wash car using the 2-bucket method.
The foam gun I bought was from Amazon for about $30, and came with a quick-disconnect nozzle etc. This gun doesn't produce a consistent, thick layer of foam, rather a layer of suds that may just sloth off eventually if the surface of the car is slick. I'm happy with it as it is easy to set up and use. Setting up a pressure washer is much more work, and I'm queezy about hitting the surface with a lot of water pressure. The soaking/dwelling appears to do the job quite adequately. This is not a good system to use if you are concerned about conserving water.

use one almost every time I wash the daily drivers here...............
adds lubricity and reduces or eliminates the chance of inducing swirls and scratches...........................
also, Adam's has a regular 32 0z. Foam Gun for about 40.00 too........ even less when they run sales and promotions............

Got something better for ya. If you want one I'll give you mine, used it a couple of times and never bothered with it again. Not sure what brand it is but it's one of the "popular" ones. Just give me a few bucks for shipping and I'll send it to ya, as long as you're in the USofA

They are great for using a ton of car wash soap in a very short amount of time.
