Default More On Paint Protection Film (PPF)

I was surprised at how many threads about PPF are on CF. However, if you would allow one more (I couldn't find a directly cogent thread). Sorry in advance if this is considered SPAM or an unauthorized commercial.

Even with all the opinions on pricing, for or against and on which PPF is better (or worse), I finally had it installed on my 900 mile 2016 Stingray (bought new from original dealer in Sept. 2017).

After consulting with a favored KC area detailer (a paint perfectionist), I was referred to Dave Robertson @ Mid America window Tint Specialist in Overland Park, KS (KC suburb).

Both the detailer about to perform my paint correction/ceramic coating and Dave suggested self-healing Llumar Platinum because of it's clarity on cars with new paint (mine is white). Again, I'm aware of the conflicting opinions concerning various PPF manufacturers and made a conscious selection of Llumar. Mid America also reps other PPF products including Expel.

The real reason for this post is to alert those seeking a quality shop with great pricing....check out Dave Roberston at Mid America: www.midamericatint.com. Even if you're 60 or 75 miles away, I think it'd be worth the trip just on his pricing, attention to details and the level of care he had for my car.

Dave just completed the entire front of my car (including all of the 'dental" grill and uprights), the hood including the hood vents, mirrors, door edge guards and handle "cups" for $875. I asked for extra protection behind both front and rear wheels (custom) which he did for another $25....$900 total which I found to be very reasonable vs. competitors I checked with.

Dave said he would duplicate the coverage/pricing for any CF member or referrals. He is a stand up guy devoted to attention to detail and I highly recommend his shop if you're considering this treatment for your car.

I just went through the same investigation. It boiled down to the llumar Platinum being recommended by several installers in my area. The competition was between of course the Expel, and Llumar. Since I have no idea what makes the best PPF I defer to the experts.

BTW, you got a good deal. The best I can get (online quote) is $865 for the partial install. That's front of the hood, and fenders, the entire front, headlight, and mirrors. I'm going to try a little negotiating when I take the car to the shop.

I am very happy you had a great experience and have, what appears to be, a reputable installer. Make sure you stay up on your warranty for the Llumar film......You will need it. Protect that film as best as you can, as it is easily damaged and doesn't wear well.

Thanks WD. I had read your prior posts/opinions on Llumar. Ceramic coating is next....should help with durability. Only debate is which one? I'd like one of the newer self-healing products, but the detailer has a particular one he favors for durability and gloss.

Recently got the ZR1 and applied Xpel then ceramic pro plus. I could not be happier with the combination. First time ever having either one applied. Hopefully with proper care it will stay looking this awesome.

My friend, I haven't seen your other threads about the Llumar, etc. Would you give me the readers digest version of what things I need to look for. I'm new to this stuff, and need an experienced opinion. TIA

I haven't posted anything about Llumar films. It was applied to a vehicle we used daily and always planned to get rid of, we traded it. The film was a mess within months. Required more attention than the paint ever did. I have had 3M and X-Pel films on cars used as much, if not more, and driven in much harsher climate (now in Colorado, Llumar was on a Texas only vehicle before our move).

My straight up opinion, stay away from Llumar. X-Pel Ultimate is very durable, Suntek is probably most optically clear(I believe a tad less durable than X-Pel), and 3M really depends on your installer. Actually, all depend on the installer, so only find certified installers that are willing to talk with you about your needs.

OK WhiteDiamond. We get it....you just don't like Llumar. At first, I was just gonna let it go.

However, with a one vehicle experience, you're doing a disservice to those who might consider using Llumar. The best advice in your replies to this thread is to follow the advice of a trusted installer.

I dealt with a certified installer for SunTech, Expel and Llumar. And you know what he suggested for best clarity (on a new, white car), after install gloss factor and durability? Llumar. The same PPF recommended by a reputable detailer in my town (he referred me to the installer). After interviewing both, and checking on their referrals, I decided to take their professional recommendations and created this post.....about fair pricing, taking care with my car and great customer service.

BTW, if you "haven't posted anything about Llumar films," what is this (from your 03/06/18 post on Sonax coating):

No comment on Sonax product you asked(zero experience with it), however, I have something to add for your thoughts on LLumar. I have had 3M clear bra(just over 10 years ago) installed, LLumar PPF(just over 6 years ago), and now I have only X-Pel ultimate on my vehicles. I think Suntek may be the better PPF, but I can say one thing without regret, LLumar is not a good product. Stay away from it. 3M's PPF was much better in use than the LLumar was. The vehicle with LLumar was always intended to be sold/traded after kid left for college, so I left it as was. If it was any vehicle I intended to keep, I would have had it removed and replaced by X-Pel.
